Eh. Every year is kinda the same to me... Some really good stuff surrounded by a lot of crap.

Last year sucked pretty hard too, although I guess at least there was Phantom Thread. Haven't seen enough from this/last year to make a judgment.

I thought this year was great, two bonafide masterpieces in my opinion with Burning and Roma, and then other great films including First Reformed, The Rider, The Favourite, Minding the Gap, and more.

As a year, oh god was it a test of endurance.
In film, there’s definitely an arguement to be made. If not outright bad, it was a total snoozefest, especially with a lot of the blockbusters (Fallout is still insanely overrated).

Lmao. Just because a lot of lame stuff is getting recognized this awards season? Yeah, no.

Quite a few of my most anticpated films ended up being disappointments (Suspiria, Hold the Dark, Mute, Annihilation), so in a way this year has been a little frustrating, but most of the stuff in my current top 10 are films that I didn't expect to be there going into last year, so I guess that's cool. As far as the likely BP nominees though, yeah it's pretty godawful.

I don't agree. Domestically yes it has been rather weak but there's a lot of damn great foreign films released this year. Four out of my top five of the year are foreign films.

I think they all kinda sucked though. Just a matter of which one sucks less. Years like 2014 and 2016 are dope and are exceptions here, and 2010 sucks less than the general mediocre output of this decade. The overall stuff of the Obama period just doesn't reach the heights of the 90s or 00s. 2011 is bad in your eyes? how? just on the surface you got Tree of Life, Margaret, Mysteries of Lisbon, Meek's Cutoff, Certified Copy, Uncle Boonmee, Dangerous Method, In the Family, Tuesday, After Christmas, Brighter Summer Day, etc

Yes!
I've been luckly recently to see some films which have elevated it somewhat. Also, I still have about 5 - 10 more to watch, which I have varying levels of hopefulness about, but whatever happens with them, I see it ending up as a year having a small amount of real top quality at the top, and quickly dropping off. It just doesn't have that depth of high quality films. I suspected this would be the case about halfway through the year and it has played out that way.
I think this mostly underwhelming looking set of nominees for every show and awards body is a fair reflection of this averageness.

I've loved nearly everything I've seen from last year, so I disagree.
For Hollywood it seems a little dismal (though Into the Spiderverse is an all-timer), but it was nothing short of fantastic for Hindi cinema (basically the opposite of 2017). Worst for me would be 2010.

I wouldn't say it's the worst, but it was definitely underwhelming.

I haven't seen much so I can't state a definitive comment. But I can say that much that at least it looks that way. Many of my more anticipated films turned out as disappointments.
2016 was pretty bad too.

I think it's been a great year for films and there are at least 20 more films I'm dying to see. This is shaping to be the worst award season of the decade though.

2011 is bad in your eyes? how? just on the surface you got Tree of Life, Margaret, Mysteries of Lisbon, Meek's Cutoff, Certified Copy, Uncle Boonmee, Dangerous Method, In the Family, Tuesday, After Christmas, Brighter Summer Day, etc Putting bold the ones I've seen....... those would all make my top 10. Margaret would make my top 3. Then you have The Tragedy of Man, The Turin Horse, Two Years At Sea, Killer Joe. No I wouldn't call the year bad.... I just forgot about it for a sec. I don't think the year is very deep though.... after the top 6 or 7, there's a big drop and there's not a whole lot of other stuff there based on the ones I've seen. The ones in bold already make up half of the great stuff of the year. I'd call it a good year, but only 2014 and 2016 I would call great. 2011 and 2010 are pretty good. The rest.... meh. Mysteries of Lisbon is all-time level great imo, would recommend

Well it was certainly no 2015 or 2017...
But I still have a lot to see from this year.

2010 and 2012 were far worse. I'm actually pretty pleased with 2018 so far and I still have a ton of films to see. It's true there have only been a couple that truly "wowed" me but the majority of my viewings are sitting comfortably at 7.5 or 8 in my ratings and my average letterboxd score is the second highest of the decade at 3.4. That will go down when I watch Vice but I have a lot of heavy hitters left to see. My lowest score of the decade is actually 2013 at 3.07, which doesn't surprise me because that's my most-viewed year of the decade and although there are at least 10 great films from that year, there's also an ocean of disappointment. In 2012 there are only two movies I can say I loved ( The Master, Moonrise Kingdom) and ditto for 2010 ( Another Year, True Grit).

I loved it even as someone who hasn't at really delved into Proust, and I know some people who are more familiar with the source material (not sure if you are or not, just remember you're big into literature) even prefer it to Lisbon, which I agree is fantastic.
