Damn, I was hoping for Zimmer to come back. HGW can be great but only when he's properly inspired (like he was while working on Kingdom of Heaven). I hope we get that version of him.

First image of Pedro Pascal in costume. Looks like he's from Hobbiton, but it'll probably work in context

Uh oh…… MAR going to be lit! Lol! Nice to hear that, particularly about the GOAT. I mean, it wouldn't exactly be a shock for him to give an all-timer performance (that's kinda what he does a lot of the time), but I'm still gonna wait to see how it's recieved. But nice to hear some early hype behind Denzel. Though I imagine some sad bastard is already screenshotting this post to keep on their hard drive, so they can whip it out in 5 years time to tell me how I was a delusional stan for thinking he'd be good in this movie But yeah, MAR will become a complete hellhole if this turns out to be true.

I feel too burned by Ridley in recent years, and the screenwriter being David Scarpa? I have zero expectations; I just hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I liked Napoleon more than you did (though some if Phoenix's acting choices were baffling), and I thought The Last Duel was brilliant, so my expectations from Ridley are still reasonably high. But it's also Denzel. You know what that means, even if some people here don't (or pretend not to). He always delivers.

Man, I think my biggest wish for 2024's cinematic slate is for this to be awesome. Gladiator is such a great fucking movie and Ridley screwing up the sequel would be so disappointing. He's been often working on autopilot lately, seemingly more preoccupied with setting up multiple cameras (and then bragging about it) rather than finding the emotional core of his stories, but I hope this will be different. The first Gladiator works so well because of how purely emotional it is, in addition to being a tremendous spectacle. If we get at least part of that here, I'll be content. And of course it'd be great to see Denzel have a proper juicy role too. What I'm concerned with is that damn writer...

Nothing of his I've seen that he's written strikes me as atrocious based on his writing ( Napoleon, All The Money In The World). I actually thought his screenplay for All The Money In The World was excellent. He knows three act structure and can write believable dialogue. Do you really need much more than that for a film like Gladiator? ( the script for the first film was literally written daily on the set as they went along). The film will live or die on Ridley's direction, production and art design, stunt co-ordination, costumes, and how much depth the actors bring to their performances. The script just need to be competent.

Now this is the kind of screenwriter (s) that when I look at their body of work, really make me scared for a project.

The film will live or die on Ridley's direction, production and art design, stunt co-ordination, costumes, and how much depth the actors bring to their performances. The script just need to be competent What's wrong with him is Napoleon. All the Money in the World was a decent, if unremarkable, procedural but Napoleon required him to build an epic narrative while also establishing a relationship between Napoleon and Josephine, and I think Scarpa kind of messed up on both occasions. And I get it, Gladiator 2 isn't a historical biopic, but I'm a little afraid that we're gonna see an incoherent story and, even worse, a lack of a strong emotional core. The latter simply has to be there for the sequel to even begin approaching the first one. And it's precisely that that was missing from Napoleon. And yeah, I need a little more from a writer than merely knowing the basics which every writer is kinda supposed to know. If I want a great film, that is. And I actually think Ridley's movies often live or die exactly on the basis of their scripts, especially lately because, again, he's been often working on autopilot. What he's missing these days is infusing his films with a sense of character perspective - he sometimes feels like a mere depictor without any kind of stance. But give him a very good script like The Last Duel which basically forces him to put himself in characters' heads since it's all about perspective and voila - the film ends up terrific. So if Scarpa's script is less the emotional rollercoaster of the first Gladiator (which yes, they rewrote daily, but with a great goal in mind) and more about the empty ABCs of something like Robin Hood, we've got a problem which no action scenes and production design and stunts will be able to solve. This is why Tony was a more dependable director - his crazy style and desire to make you care about the story could always elevate a pedestrian script. Ridley isn't quite like that, at least in this late period of his. And that's why I'm concerned about Scarpa's script. Gladiator 2 has a hell of a legacy to live up to (and Ridley's already failed a legacy of one of his masterworks with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant) so I don't just want a competent movie, I want a great one.

I love Paul Mescal but I am like 80% certain that this will be a box office failure and critical disappointment (RT 50-60%).

Aside from Barry Keoghan leaving the project, every bit of news that comes out about this just makes it sound better and better. Ridley is going to fucking cook

There is always a rumor - that became a very big rumor last time on Nappy the Conqueror - that now Scott has taken a hands off approach and turned Napoleon over to his team so that would make sense if that's true........on the other hand Scott doesn't let bad info out like that so he may issue a "that's bullshit" denial........nearly doubling the budget is a very, very un-Ridley thing........the fact that it's Hollywood Reporter is a bit surprising tbh
