So apparently there was a rather unsavory response to The Nightingale at Venice, where at the end of the very first press screening, someone yelled "You suck, whore!" when Kent's name came up in the credits. Cretins abound. That shit better not dominate the press surrounding her movie. It's bad enough that all the press so far has been framed around her being the only in-competition woman director at Venice. While it's important to support and rally for more female filmmakers, it sucks that someone of Kent's talents will have to answer endless questions pertaining to her gender. That's not something a male director would ever have to do.

I do hope that it becomes a non-issue, but I can also see it working out in Kent's favor if a.) she responds to it well, and b.) the jury might feel they want to make a statement, and wind up giving her Best Director, especially with the gender disparity among filmmakers in competition. That seems to be the big "issue" surrounding the festival this year, and it certainly sounds like the sort of film that would take Best Director.

The asshole apologized (lol) on Facebook and the management of the Venice Film Festival cancelled his accreditation and banned him from attending it from now on.

Okay, gang, let's get our final Venice prize predictions in: Me thinks Portman will win best actress🙂 It's possible. The field is incredibly wide this year for the category. I almost put her down to win and The Favourite for the Golden Lion, but decided against it at the last second. Plus, as an avowed Portman hater who remembers how everyone lost their goddamn minds over her back in 2016 thinking she'd sweep the field, I decided not to buy entirely into the hype. But she definitely could. Hell, Aparicio and Jakub and Franciosi and even Claire Foy are also potential winners here as well.

But I can see the subject matter appealing to the jury. Is there also going to be another separate jury prize? If so, yeah, What You Gonna Do... feels like a good pick there. I think if Jakab doesn't win the Mastroianni, it might be Baykali Ganambarr.

I can see Portman win the Volpi Cup but I feel like it's already an afterthought. Personally I found her okay, Aparicio and Franciosi are soooo much better. Actually, the only thing keeping me from predicting Roma for the Golden Lion is the same as yours, although Guillermo isn't the kind of guy who cares that much about gossip.
Ganambarr would a super worthy winner of the Mastroianni.

I don't think a lot of people would complain about bias or anything, considering Roma's critical dominance (although it just lost the FIPRESCI to Sunset!), but I do think that Guillermo might feel the need to recuse himself in a way from rewarding the film, because I know he's been somewhat unofficially involved in Roma's production (as all the Amigos are with their respective films; they screen them for the others and ideas off of them). Plus I think that there are enough ways to reward the film without going for the Lion. It's a win-win. The Favourite does feel like the second-best choice, and as I said I almost picked it to win, but that would invalidate a Colman victory. If it were up to you, with the films you've seen, how would you vote?

Eh sadly I've only seen four movies (I missed The Favourite, First Man and At Eternity's Gate by an inch), so my opinion doesn't have that much value, but. I doubt there's a better film than Roma. Not just at the festival but in this whole year. It would be a natural pick for the Golden Lion it if wasn't for president Guillermo. It is my Golden Lion and it will most probably be my #1 in my final Top 10. With Roma as the Golden Lion, my pick for Best Actress would be Aisling Franciosi, who would also have a great breakthrough. Best Actor would go to one of the Audiard boys (and I loved Gyllenhall in particular).
The Sisters Brothers is being underestimated for the palmares, by the way. I could see Eternity's Gate winning a different prize than Best Actor, with this latter going to the Audiard bunch. I can totally see a scenario where Franciosi wins Best Actress, the Audiard men win the male Volpi Cup and Schnabel getting the Best Director prize.

Dafoe's got the showier role for sure, but I think The Sisters Brothers is winning something, and in lieu of a better option, I can see it taking the Volpi Cup. At Eternity's Gate is my alternate Golden Osella pick for its camerawork, but I didn't think First Man would leave empty-handed. There are so many potential combos for prizes this year, it's insane.

Yep. We kind of know what movies are going to be rewarded but the combinations are just too many. Also the fact that there are TWO critically raved movies doesn't help. There's Roma but there's also The Favourite, which heavily relies on its female cast. Could the jury give The Favourite both the Grand Jury Prize AND the collective Volpi Cup? It might happen, à la The Master. Considering the reception it got (and the people on the jury that I'm sure adored it), the sole Volpi Cup seems a bit reductive for the film. Schnabel's movie is 100% getting something. But what? Audiard is a festival favourite, and he hit home with his first English-language feature. Osella or Volpi Cup? Reilly is superb and I think he's one of the main contenders for the Volpi Cup. The Nightingale will win a prize, even just considering that it's the only movie directed by a woman. Nemes and Assayas are other potential spoilers. And maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't totally rule out a surprise award for Suspiria.
This Venice Film Festival was really memorable.

Apparently, the festival rules this year stipulate no joint prizes. So I guess we're not gonna see a repeat of 2012, when Phoenix/Hoffman shared Best Actor. Before I learned that, I had considered The Favourite might go that route. Imagine a world where Emma Stone had two Volpi Cups in three years. Yeah, I totally think Suspiria could win the Osella for Thom Yorke.

And Reilly would be the Sister brother for the male trophy.
