Also, not mentioned yet: The Other Side of the Wind getting positive reception thus far... Todd McCarthy of THR is actually in the film, and thinks it's an appropriate realization of Welles' vision. The Wrap considers it "worth the wait", a fitting bookend to Kane for Welles' career. Indiewire remarks that it still seems "unfinished", but nonetheless describes it as "essential viewing". Telegraph gives it a 5/5. The Guardian rates it 4/5, similarly remarks on the "unfinished" nature of the film but deems it wild and brilliant.

I mentioned this in The Old Man and A Gun thread but this is a historic year for the Oscars and their relation to the industry.
There isn't a Netflix ghetto after this year really imo - Roma is going to change that not only for what it is but for the type of film it is and because Lisa Taback works for them now. They have that film, Taback and The Irishman in their back pocket and a lot of people in the industry and Academy are secretly on their side - they are looking to join up with them.
The Oscars meanwhile by introducing a Best Popular film force the industry to think back on its glorious past and champion it : That means Redford, A Star Is Born, and a visionary piece of cinema even if it doesn't win - Roma. They all fit "its past" in different ways.
It's going to be a historic year .......

There still is a Netflix ghetto if only because a lot of the industry luminaries (i.e. Spielberg) still have openly derided the platform as not being "true cinema." I don't think it's a prevailing notion among the younger, newer members of the Academy, and indeed it's only a matter of time before you see Netflix break that glass ceiling in much the way Amazon and A24 did. Beasts of No Nation was far too bleak and unfriendly for the average cinemagoer. Roma is going to be their big push for sure, but because it's also an esoteric "arthouse" film, it's still got a bit of an uphill climb. It needs the critical momentum to carry it into the industry.

First review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is Time's, and it's positive, noting a storybook feel, melancholy tone, and dazzling visuals. Hopefully more to come...

That Coen Brothers film is everything I look for in a film nowadays - weird, odd, baffling, unsure how you should feel about it, etc.
So far this year has been a disaster imo and even the good reviewed ones coming out of Venice have a strange fascist quality from the reviewers - you WILL feel like this about it, etc.
God Bless the Coens, they're needed now more than ever.......

I'm hyped for First Man, The Favourite, Roma and cautiously eager to see A Star Is Born, but am I the only one bothered with the over-the-top the raves are being thrown this year at Venice? It's like every review is trying to outdo the other in the search of the next BP winner.

It's like every review is trying to outdo the other in the search of the next BP winner. That actually happens pretty much every year lately. And to be fair, 3 of the last 4 BP winners were at Venice and everyone wants to be able to say "I called it first."

Beatrice Behn @danslecinema Why, hello there hyper political, feminist, slightly gory #Suspiria. I did not see you coming. #DeathToAllOtherMothers #Venezia75
Really want my horror - a genre with a rich and glorious tradition - to either incorporate these themes integrally to the story (The Witch) or avoid them almost entirely (the original Suspiria). I am looking forward to this film but horror used to incorporate many themes - social, political, spiritual etc. out of the material itself - not lay it on top of the material ............and it used to do it in less than 100 minutes.

Just so long as it's a hundred times better. The Suspiria reviews are exciting. The Peterloo reviews give me a little pause but I've never been bored by a Mike Leigh film. Mr. Turner took its time creating the atmosphere and immersing the viewer in it, and I loved it for that. It was like catching a glimpse of another time and place filtered through Leigh's dryly witty perspective. That goes for Topsy-Turvy as well. I love Leigh's writing and his use of improvisation so I still have total faith in Peterloo.

Word from At Eternity's Gate should be any minute now, but in the meantime, here's two clips of it.Its camerawork looks very reminiscent of modern-day Malick, and I don't necessarily mean in a good way.

What did Terrence Malick ever do to you to deserve being compared to that? It's not nearly as smooth or as swooping as Chivo's work, but I was getting huge Song to Song vibes from it with the weird ping-ponging back-and-forth between actors as they talk.

Um... is it just me or does it seem like the performances look and sound REALLY stiff and uninterested? Or maybe it’s the dialogue or maybe it’s how it’s shot to match the dialogue, I don’t know but... that wasn’t a promising look for me. 👀
