At least the new Denis premieres today. Looks ok. Looks like she can apply some of that Trouble Every Day imagery here - that movie was so awesomely alienating and part of that is because Denis is so good at that type of stuff. And she shoots inside a small room better than most people I can think of. Plenty of opportunities to apply it here. Trouble Every Day owns. You seen her latest with Binoche? Got an unfathomably tepid reaction given how good it is, one of the best of the year so far imo.

I've had High Life as my most anticipated film of the year, so I can't wait to finally hear something about it. Anyone know when it screens? Are we going to have to wait till tomorrow to actually get some reactions? I read somewhere on Twitter that we'll get reactions for it around 11PM tonight, no idea of the validity of that information however.

Nobody posted the Gloria Bell raves - almost every review is positive. A24 has this and "planning a Spring 2019 release" but uhh why wouldn't they put this in their Dec 7 slot and move Under the Silver Lake to next year...? Seems like a no-brainer, you'd prob have definite nominees in Moore and John Turturro in Lead & Supporting.

Can't copy/paste them right now, but the first batch of reactions to If Beale Street Could Talk is very very positive. Hope the reviews are equally strong.

High Life confirmed masterpiece. Thank you based Denis for gifting us two of the best movies of the year. I regret not going to Toronto specifically for High Life.

So it seems like Green Book (the movie with Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen) might be a strong contender. We might be saying Oscar nominee Peter Farrelly this time next year.

Xavier Dolan's The Death and Life of John F. Donovan also premiered yesterday. First batch of tweets was pretty polarizing: generally positive reactions from festival goers including occasional raves from Dolan/Harington stans, but with plenty of lukewarm responses as well. Verified critics seemed a lot less smitten with it, and now that the official reviews are starting to roll in, it's... not looking very good. General consensus seems to be that it's Dolan at his Dolaniest, diving head first into the trademark aesthetic/narrative impulses that either make or break his previous work for viewers. It's being criticized for its music cues and haphazard plotting, with the post-production issues being particularly evident. Some of the scenes I've read about are... quite something. Also: from the looks of it, Jacob Tremblay's performance is tailor-made for a Love It or Hate It poll.

Those Beale Street reactions are amazing. Wondering if I should read the book before or after my first viewing (the only Baldwin book I've read is The Fire Next Time, which was phenomenal). My god it looks like 2018 is going to end with a bang. Cuaron, Jenkins, Kent, Lanthimos, Coens, Guadagnino, and more are all here to make up for the terribly disappointing blockbuster season.

I’m curious if the reaction would’ve differed if Jessica Chastain’s scenes weren’t cut.

I think A Star is Born will ultimately get the audience award, but from what I'm hearing, Green Book seems to be quite the crowd pleaser and could have a lot of support as well.
