Why is Gene Hackman more adept at comedy than any of his 70s peers? I mean he had some ace comic roles late in his career but not so much so that he'd stand out over them Anyway, I'd say Kevin Kline

Jack Lemmon is always my go-to answer for this type of question.

Jon Hamm Melissa McCarthy (I know this might be divisive, but even in her shittiest movies, she has mostly good comedic timing) Charlize Theron

That's more range in comedy than any of his peers showed.

Not really, Dustin Hoffman starred in Tootsie and The Graduate which are landmarks in the genre, DeNiro at least starred in Meet the Parents and Midnight Run, Nicholson has several that he starred in, Pacino has an Oscar nomination for a comedy, a Golden Globe nomination in the last 5 years in a comedy really, and I'd say a rather wonderful romantic comedy (Frankie & Johnny). Plus are we really throwing in 1 scene in Young Frankenstein and Superman 1 and 2 as THAT comedic? I mean I'm not including Analyze This or Oceans 13 but if we are just listing titles I could - and most of them these dudes are starring in them. Nah, he's good at it, but all of that was support - and I'm not saying he's worse at it than them but he's not really better at it that he would be the first name listed in this thread

Hackman can do dry humour and extroverted comedy as good as anyone while still maintaining a character in the confines of the film. I mean Superman has brilliant comedic moments in there along with his chemistry with his co-stars.

Ok, we're not that far off really and I love Hackman in Royal Tenenbaums too - it's just I think he sort of did Supporting cool stuff where he never had to be the whole show but could add his bit and then drop out, but he definitely did it well, no dispute there He would have been good to see try a romantic comedy - actually they should have all done more of that.

Jack Lemmon really is the standard for this. Along with Tom Hanks. Most of the greats like Robert DeNiro, Paul Newman or Gene Hackman are capable of both as well.
For women I enjoy what Marisa Tomei can do in both genres.

I've been on a Jason Bateman kick lately and damn is he both suited for comedy & drama . Really underrated actor (Ozark , Horrible Bosses , The Gift)

Very few actors are EQUALLY adept at comedy and drama, Jack Lemmon is one of them.
Peter Sellers hasn't been mentioned, without matching his comedic talent, I think he was a fine dramatic actor too, mostly demonstrated in obscure movies (Never Let Go, Hoffman...).
