Hellboy is getting a second chance at (cinematic) life. On his Facebook page, “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola announced an R-rated reboot of the franchise starring “Stranger Things” star David Harbour in the lead role. “The Descent” director Neil Marshall will helm the project. Not much else is known at this time. RELATED: Guillermo Del Toro: Hellboy 3 Will 100% Not Happen This news comes just two months after director Guillermo del Toro, who brought the character to the big screen in 2004, confirmed that “Hellboy 3” would not happen. Whispers of a supposed third entry into the Hellboy film series circulated for years, even though it never seemed all that likely to happen. While the devoted fans are there, the financial returns for del Toro’s pricey adaptations made it a difficult sell from the start. Recently, however, a glimmer of hope seemed to appear when del Toro teased a Twitter poll regarding a meeting between star Ron Perlman, series creator Mike Mignola, and himself. The meeting eventually did take place, but unfortunately, it appears to have been for naught. RELATED: Hellboy Gets His Own ‘Hell Water’ Whiskey Fans, and Perlman himself, called for another sequel since the premiere of “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” Although Perlman was long optimistic about the chances for a third “Hellboy” film, he finally conceded last year that it will “probably never happen.” “We don’t talk about that anymore,” he said in October, referring to del Toro, “Because he’s busy, and I’m busy. Maybe one day he’s going to call and say, ‘Hey, let’s do it.’ But for right now? We’re happy discovering new worlds to conquer.” Harbour, who will play the title character, is no stranger to comic book adaptations. He has appeared in minor roles in both “Suicide Squad” and “The Green Hornet.” However, his career recently took off when he starred as Jim Hopper in “Stranger Things.” His past credits include “Black Mass,” “State of Affairs” and “The Newsroom.” RELATED: Hellboy: 15 Things You Never Knew Marshall has worked largely in fantasy, science fiction and horror, dabbling in such projects as “Game of Thrones,” “Constantine,” “Hannibal,” “Timeless” and “Westworld.” His past credits also include “Dog Soldiers,” “Doomsday,” “Centurion” and “Tales of Halloween.” He will also contribute to the upcoming “Lost in Space” TV series, which is currently filming. The upcoming “Hellboy” reboot has no release date at this time. Wait, wait, wait, we couldn't get a proper Hellboy 3 because the first two weren't major financial success, so instead we're getting an R-rated reboot? Man, fuck this.

I have very mixed feelings about this. Neil Marshall is not a bad choice for the series, just wish the reboot wasn't being made under the circumstances it was.

Harbour was easily my favorite actor in Stranger Things, so this COULD be good.

Bad idea. Hellboy being under the helm of another director is fine; del Toro can be done if he wants. Hellboy being R is fine too, though I am not convinced making th film less accessible will help it financially. Hellboy being rebooted....? No. Hellboy recasting its lead...? No.

They're obviously trying to copy last year's Deadpool and hoping for a similar outcome or better.

Not bad. This looks very promising since it's true to comics form.

Not Ron Perlman, not interested.

Oh, crap! Nah, looks great, but there's like no difference. Can he replicate Perlman's charm, though.

Definitely looks badass, but I doubt Harbour will be able to inject the same level of charisma and charm that Perlman was able to a decade ago. We'll see though.

I think he looks good. Looking forward to seeing how he'll play the role.

Wow, damn. Well now I'm convinced that a reboot of a not particularly successful franchise in which del Toro didn't get to make a third movie was really necessary and vital!

I dig the look, even if it's a bit too much like Perlman. I like David Harbour a lot and wish him the best. Don't get me wrong, I'm bummed about not getting Hellboy 3 from Ron Perlman and Guillermo Del Toro but the more I hear about this new one, the more potential I think it has. Neil Marshall is directing (who directed the Game of Thrones episodes "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall") and they're aiming for an R rating so hopefully this ends up being good

Verrrryyyyyy meh on that trailer. Nothing glaringly bad, but nothing standing out making me wanna see it either.

It feels weird not seeing Perlman under the make-up since I've come to associate the character with him so much, but Harbour looks and sounds pretty good. The previous Hellboy films are among Del Toro's best work, and I feel like this might be missing something without him behind the reins, but this looks like it might still be fun.

It's... kinda cheesy and dorky looking, and I'm okay with that. But after watching the del Toro/Perlman partnership, this looks so safe. And the fake abs on HB made me giggle. They really had to go shirtless?

So far looks the same as the del Toro films only without the visual creativity, Perlman's commanding voice, and great ensemble dynamic. That might be harsh judgment for a 2-minute trailer, but this project needs to justify its existence for me considering the proper finale we could have had.

This looks weird. I mean I like seeing Harbour in a leading role, but the tone and look of the film is off. It's like they decided to take del toro's vision and drain it of any of the things that made those films work. I'll maybe give it a shot, but I am skeptical.

That’s the second time Guillermo’s baby has been stolen away and pasted over with excessive CG.
