Octavia Spencer is literally the 2nd most nominated black actress in history after Viola Davis.

They might not be "cursed" but I expected them to do better once they won... (bro went and made his only panned film after his win) Well....... Haneke - a straight up genius in a world of Spike Lee's (um) - didn't really get panned exactly.......most people didn't know what to make of it............it's positive on RT (69%) has some big supporters outside the US...........I am pretty sure HE thinks Happy End - is great anyway - and it sorta is just not among his best............a film that only he could have made that maybe doesn't reach his masterpieces (it doesn't) but weirdly pokes fun at him and his fanboys almost to the point of purposeful self-parody.....................he was an old 70 or so when he won and has a very "look at my filmography and try to top it bitches" sort of comfortable arrogance about him.......... Happy End is in some ways a perfect "goodbye film" (and in Haneke's case a Fuck You film) - we had TWO in that year (2017) - Happy End & Phantom Thread for DDL.....

Haneke didn't win an Oscar. Austria won the Oscar for Amour. Haneke didn't. It's splitting hairs and I wouldn't argue the point of him being eligible for this thread, but Haneke is not an Oscar-winning director.

Not to sidetrack from the main intent of the threat but The Seventh Continent might just be the best film Imma see all 2024 if it wasn't so harrowing.... fuck.

but Haneke is not an Oscar-winning director. Double Fuck. Wait a second, so the second Oscar-winning film from Austria directed itself? is Haneke literally the closest-humanly-possible-to-win Oscarless person? he even gave a speech! (cut from this clip)

Haneke didn't win an Oscar. Ah....I wasn't sure if the Oscar for Amour went directly to Haneke or if he was just allowed to be the one to pick it up. I assumed the award actually went to the producers, and Haneke isn't listed as a producer on the film. Edit: Yeah, stephen covered it. Haneke himself isn't an Oscar winner.

In the last 15 years or so, the director's name is engraved on the Foreign Film Oscar.... so Haneke actually has an Oscar (only the director gets to keep it now) with the words "Michael Haneke" on it.... I'd call that an Oscar winner tbh

It's silly that the makers of the film don't officially get credited as Oscar winners. You can still acknowledge the country the film came from. But it should be at least like Best Picture, where the main producers are the "official" winners as well.

Producers of winners in the International Film category aren't Oscar-winners, either. It is the country that is the award recipient. It's why Alfonso Cuaron only won two Oscars for Roma and not three.
Lately, they've been allowing the director to decide what to do with the trophy, and the directors are the ones who accept the award on behalf of the country, but they aren't Oscar winners.

Just checked Ingmar Berman is credited nominated for 9 academy awards while all three FL (or international) winning films for his country are directed by him... Fellini has 12.... feeling like my whole life was a lie tbh... and this realization makes Tom Hooper's win 100X more infuriating y'know

They might not be "cursed" but I expected them to do better once they won... I sorta agree with Hathaway. She's been in a couple of good things, but she's had a very rough run of projects in the last decade or so. I feel like she maintains stardom these days more based on looking good at the front row of fashion shows and being on magazine covers, than because of significant interest in her projects. I feel like she had everything needed to be where Margot Robbie and Emma Stone are now, but with a few exceptions, her project selection has been diabolical. She does kind of explain why she maybe struggled a bit today actually: As for the only one left I remember she received a wave of serious hate around that year's Oscar season - before the word "cringe" was as used as it was today... that Stone and Robbie definitely haven't had... I found it silly tho; she always seemed well-natured to me. (But only "seemed". They're actors you know. we can never know for sure.)

Never gonna understand the HathaHate that was so present online in 2012-14. Talented, gorgeous actress in a bunch of popular, well-liked movies and she got hate because... she was too enthusiastic? Just felt like a bunch of miserable people being mad that she seemed to be having a good time.

I found it silly tho; she always seemed well-natured to me. (But only "seemed". They're actors you know. we can never know for sure.) Hathaway, like Redmayne and Bradley Cooper and Jamie Lee Curtis after her, got slammed hard because she actively wanted the Oscar and her eager persona became an easy target for critics, who seem to like it more when an actor acts like they're above the song-and-dance of campaigning (but not too above it, lest you be seen as ungrateful). And unfortunately, misogyny played a huge part in it. I was never a big fan of Hathaway and made my feelings on her Oscar-nominated performances actively known during those years, but a lot of the hate Hathaway copped was far beyond the pale, and it was clear that it had a personal impact on her even then. God forbid someone want an Oscar, the highest accolade a film actor can receive, voted on by their peers and the industry at large.

Hot take but nobody should judge people for wanting an Oscar. Especially not people like us who talk about the Oscars all year who this doesn't effect at all. Despite this thread (of which most examples given are silly) winning an Oscar can be HUGE for someone's career. Not just artistically but financially (which is taken for granted by normal people who don't see celebrities as real people doing a job they want to get paid the most for). I think people just want to imagine they are tearing down someone more successful than them.
