Hartnett is actually doing quite well for himself recently. Besides Oppenheimer, he's been in 2 recent Guy Ritchie films, co-starred in a pretty good episode of Black Mirror, and has been cast in Shyamalan's next film.

Colin Firth's career really peaked on Oscar night like he said in his speech. He didn't capitalise on his Oscar win at all.

In so much as attending the Oscars that night killed his career, yeah. I think Smith's career is far from dead. I'll be shocked if Bad Boys 4 isn't a massive hit. Oh of course and my original suggestion of Smith was partly in jest, but to go off the OP they did say "didn't really progress in the way an Oscar win would suggest" and I think Smith's Oscar win was likely going to be a full embrace of him as an elder statesman in the industry. He could already do Bad Boys at pretty much the start of his career, but the Oscar under his belt was meant to show he could be taken seriously as an actor and with that all the perks that come with it. But Smith being banned from the Oscars for a decade limits some of those career options since his mere presence will complicate any awards prospects a film may have.

Yes, I did wonder if slapgate and the Oscar ban will mean less "awards friendly" movies from him, but honestly, I can't see him changing the approach he's always had. Smith was going to make Bad Boys 4 , even if slapgate hadn't happened. He'd still make Aladdin 2, even with an Oscar. He's just built that way. He'll always want to do big budget crowdpleasers that make a lot of money. I don't think he was ever going to turn into someone who just made Oscarbait movies because he won an Oscar He still has enough power and industry juice as a producer, not just a star, to get almost any project he feels like off the ground. I think he'll still do serious dramas when he feels like it, as he's always done. He just shouldn't expect to be invited back to the Oscars anytime soon. He may not care, as he's already got the award and the validation that comes with it. I do hope Smith still makes The Council, a gangster biopic where he was supposed to play Nicky Barnes. That's actually the kind of serious dramatic role I think will actually go over well with audiences, especially since he's lost his squeaky clean aura.

I don't think Will sees himself as a serious actor. I just think he wants to be appreciated as one.

I think Smith has always been interested in trying to win an Oscar - his earlier biopic nods, Seven Pounds, failed biopic play with Concussion, and whatever the fuck Collateral Beauty was at least give me that suggestion but maybe that's just a part of his extremely midbrow taste. He at the very least has always cared deeply about industry respect as he'll freely say in interviews that even as far back as his Fresh Prince days it really mattered to him that the audience and his fellow actors believed he could act. In getting the ultimate respect of an Oscar, I think he would have been interested in capitalizing on those kinds of prestige plays as a side to his still blossoming blockbuster career (not unlike Denzel) but that avenue is closed or at the very least complicated now especially with the box office landscape making those kind of midbrow dramas that aren't playing to awards even less viable as we saw with Emancipation a film I'm sure would've had more press and awards prospects had the slap not happened.

Oh, absolutely. Smith wanted an Oscar. Like almost every actor. He made sure to do baity dramas ( some worked, some didn't) for that reason throughout his career. But now that he has the Oscar, he doesn't need to chase it anymore. He got the big acting award. His peers showed they respect him as an actor. The bigger problem for Emancipation's award prospects was it's 45% Rotten Tomatoes score, not Smith . It was a non-starter as an awards film. Reviews were nowhere near good enough. I think we need to see Smith do another well-recieved and well reviewed awards friendly drama before making the judgement that his films still can't do well with awards or even get into an Oscar race. Emancipation wasn't it. His prestige plays have always been hit and miss. I think if he does a genuinely good award worthy movie, critics will support it. Also, Smith can still be nominated for an Oscar. He just can't attend the ceremony. Also, Hollywood loves a good comeback story ( look at Robert Downey Jr). I can almost envision a scenario where AMPAS shortens his ban, and invites him back to the ceremony to present an award with Chris Rock or something

Colin Firth's career really peaked on Oscar night like he said in his speech. He didn't capitalise on his Oscar win at all. Firth was hit and miss before his Oscar, and he remained hit and miss after his Oscar. I think he's also somewhat limited in the roles/projects he does because he's not one of those actors that can comfortably slip into different accents. You notice he's always cast as an Englishman/Brit. If he felt comfortable playing Americans, he'd have a lot more choice. I would say another problem for him is the existence of Hugh Grant. Firth may have an Oscar, but Grant remains the bigger star and draw, and their casting bracket is pretty much identical. A lot of the better projects that might have suited Firth, probably came across Grant's desk first ( Florence Foster Jenkins, Paddington 2, A Very English Scandal, The Gentlemen, The Undoing etc). Saying that, I think he's had some high points post Oscar. He's easily the best thing about the Kingsman franchise, and makes a surprisingly good action hero. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a memorable project for him. As was 1917.

Smith is radioactive in Hollywood right now. His career IS probably over. He showed his true colors. BAD BOYS 4 will likely flop.
Pretty braindead to think otherwise, so his fluffer on this thread makes perfect sense.
Also, I'd bet my beach house on there being ZERO chance the ban is shortened. And how disgusting to think of him and Rock presenting together! Can you imagine if he'd assaulted a woman, someone laughing about the victim presenting with their aggressor? Then again, this fluffer is also on Jonathan Majors' dick, so he actually might.
I expect his prediction about Smith's future to go as well as his prediction about Majors: It will CRASH AND BURN. 😘

Dujardin had the one-two punch of J'accuse and Deerskin in 2019, he's doing fine.
Surprised McConaughey hasn't been mentioned. He shot True Detective and Interstellar before his Oscar win so since then he basically did nothing remarkable.

Christoph Waltz is another one. Two Oscars then nada.
Casey Affleck also hasn’t done much since his win for obvious reasons.

I don't think Waltz has given any Oscar calibre performances outside of his work for Tarantino (and I wouldn't even have nominated him for his 2nd win) , but the guy gets a lot of work, in a lot of quality productions. For a 67 year old German character actor, he's made out in Hollywood like a bandit. I think he's the opposite of cursed....he's always getting good gigs. I also think that's why he's in a position to get nominated again. He's playing Billy Wilder in Wilder & Me. It's directed by Stephen Frears and written by Christopher Hampton ( who won two screenwriting Oscars for The Father & Dangerous Liaisons). That's an incredible gig for him to book. With that team behind it and playing an iconic Hollywood director, I can see Waltz getting back in an Oscar race.

Casey Affleck is doing alright, it's not like he was an A-list draw before the Oscar win. Lots of indies he had been in got good reviews such as "A Ghost Story", "The Old Man and the Gun", "The World to Come", "Light of My Life" (which he directed), and "Dreamin' Wild". He had a memorable appearance in "Oppenheimer" last year and also in the next Doug Liman feature with Matt Damon which could be good.

Affleck's doing fine, but a Best Actor win for him in a world without those allegations would've catapulted him into a major in-demand actor, and it's possible that some of those projects he did wind up doing get a bit more traction.

He's still in many well-received projects, but they are all tiny af and they are very few and far between. He works very infrequently these days when he's widely recognised as a premier talent of his generation.

Would Brie Larson count? I know she got Captain Marvel and the Kong movie but I thought she would’ve been Oscar nominated again by now. She’s a very talented actress.

She won an Emmy in 2020 (albeit not for acting) and is likely in line to get nominated again for Lessons in Chemistry. She's one of the most visibly high-profile members of the MCU now (for better or worse, considering how that fandom treats its actresses) and has attached herself to another big franchise with Fast X. I would say she's doing well for herself even if she hasn't been attaching herself to awards bait as much. I really don't understand how playing Captain Marvel is considered a bag-drop.

If anything, she's the biggest awards success story out of anyone. She went from being a working character actress to attaining two follow-up Oscar nominations (which for a woman of colour is incredibly hard to do; only Spencer and Viola Davis have more than two acting nominations), executive producing a Best Picture winner she's not even in, headlining a box-office smash with Ma, getting Emmy-nominated for Self Made, and not really suffering any backlash even if the films don't do well. Octavia Spencer is now a name actress who can headline a project, and she's working hard behind the scenes as well.

They might not be "cursed" but I expected them to do better once they won... (bro went and made his only panned film after his win) I sorta agree with Hathaway. She's been in a couple of good things, but she's had a very rough run of projects in the last decade or so. I feel like she maintains stardom these days more based on looking good at the front row of fashion shows and being on magazine covers, than because of significant interest in her projects. I feel like she had everything needed to be where Margot Robbie and Emma Stone are now, but with a few exceptions, her project selection has been diabolical. She does kind of explain why she maybe struggled a bit today actually: Can't agree on Octavia Spencer though. I think her post Oscar career has exceeded expectations. She's been Oscar nominated twice more since her win for Hidden Figures and The Shape Of Water, been in mostly acclaimed projects ( Get On Up, Luce, Snowpiercer & Fruitvale Station, where she won the National Board Of Review Best Supporting Actress Award). She's been nominated for an acting Emmy for Self Made: Inspired By The Life Of CJ Walker. She even managed to headline a movie by herself as the sole lead ( Ma) which made serious money at the box office ( 61 million dollars off a 5 million dollar budget). For a character actress, her post Oscar career has actually been incredible. Haneke didn't win an Oscar.
