It s impossible to talk DDL's BP nominees TWBB, Phantom Thread, Lincoln, GONY, In The Name of The Father, My Left Foot without mentioning his name first among the cast every time.........but you could not mention DiCap first several times in some of his : Titanic (Winslet), The Departed, KotFM, Don't Look Up Not really sure how this can be argued - I'm a fan of both guys - but this is pretty clear DiCaprio would probably win a poll for The Departed in a landslide (as Damon has been habitually underrated for it). DiCaprio was all anybody talked about regarding Titanic when it came out. Most of the acting ink for DLU was for him. Oh I get the counter-arguments - I really do - but those are 2 BP's + KotFM + GONY where DiCap has no performance nod and The Departed and KotFM had someone else nodded.........you just can't say that about DDL.......he was always the show in movies that were often considered among the year's best...............you have to at least say that what happens occasionally to DiCaprio never happened to DDL in his biggest BP nodded films that's all..........not every actor wins every metric like that ........the more movies you make the harder it is to do actually

You can prefer Brando, you can prefer Pacino, Duvall, Cazale, De Niro, whatever. To me, the fact that DDL is the highlight of a number of bland BP nominees isn't something that elevates him. He either has grave limitations at picking strong material, or has trouble forging connections with his fellow performers between "action" and "cut", or both. Could DDL even comport himself well in something like The Last Picture Show, a true ensemble of great performances? Isn't it telling none of his films came close to winning Best Picture, with all of these advantages of being respected, working with top directors and so forth? Not counting Gandhi.

I say this all the time - like constantly ^ - that there are several metrics for actors........one of them is ensemble acting.....I always champion actors who can do ensemble work but the truth is DDL will always have some limitaton because of his limited work ......there's no way in 19 films that you can check every box and compete with guys who have more work and types of work.........that's why I never consider him in my big 4 GOATs (DePac, Brando, Nicholson) but it's EXACTLY because of that limited work some people do place him like that....... I know you're a big fan of DiCap's - I am too........and it must get annoying seeing people default to DDL over him in some ways......but that's a different thread......I'm just saying you brought up filmography and that limited work allows him rightly or wrongly to stand out more in that one way in that case.............in those biggest, acclaimed films.......
