Sprints Ticking
Irish bands don't fuck around with album openers - Fontaines D.C. on Skinty Fia, The Clockworks on Exit Strategy, Lankum on False Lankum - all have opened their last albums with immediate new classics - and CMAT has opened both of her albums with a masterpiece (Nashville) and a quasi-sequel nearly as good (California)
Sprints - Ireland's latest world beaters -opens their full length debut album with this song that is rypical of them and downright frightening tbh - and like I said in my album review there is some metal in this bands Arty Noise-Rock in the precision and rattle of their roar
2024 has arrived with this band of the moment:

Jesus and Mary Chain Chemical Animal
Their 1 millionth song about heroin in their 40 glorious years making Rock and Roll........this one is one of the most sinister, slow and somewhat evil ones ......weirdly beautiful too..........they are masters at this stuff tbh........

The Libertines Shiver
3rd single - all quite good or better - from the all-time greats upcoming 4th record - all great or better on their first 3 albums.......comes out on March 8th - same day as Jesus and Mary Chain (see above) which is not only a sacred day for two of the greatest Rock acts of the last 25 (Libs) and 40 years (JAMC) but also a cosmic in-joke about drug addicton I guess...........fatalism hangs over each acts newest songs like a black cloud......

Kacey Musgraves Deeper Well
One of the best popular performers drops a new single that sounds lovely, and low key and kind of like a female Dylan in the late 60s........she is almost entirely outside of other Pop tastes - critics love her, many people see her as old fashioned.......she is fascinatingly out of step yet in step with her times
Good song, regardless of genre

Lorne Behrman Love in Desperate Times
If I was a cynic, I'd call him a Lou Reed-ripoff......but thee's a lot worse things yo can be in 2024 than a Lou Reed rip-off .......seen what's on the charts?

The Courettes Shake!
The best song they've done - and they've done great ones - also the best female guitar solo since NOBRO's Let's Do Drugs (2023) - and the solo comes late in the song ad bleeds into the song itself instead of cutting off...........this also uses an old Rock and Roll trick where the singer shouts "Whooo!" because they know how hot the song is too.......

Kate Clover Damage ControlTypically excellent new single from one of the few American Rock acts who gets it....... Joaquim who knows what's up.........this is VERY Debbie Harry-ish.......which she often is........not a false step in her young career so far.....

Off the top of my head I think that’s some of the most Debbie Harry-ish I’ve heard her sound. Loved it and she is looking stunning in the vid. The queen doesn’t miss

The Libertines Oh ShitTaking its title from the great Buzzcocks song and its sound from a Jam song I can't quite place (?) - this is another tuneful winner from their new forthcoming LP.....I criticized this album a bit in my early review for not drawing enough blood but maybe with 3 records under their belts that look like emotional massacres that is for the best after all ........and like I said ...The Libertines never made a bad album or anywhere close to one really......not this one either......they may be incapable of it actually

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Wild God
Extremely Bowie-ish - in crooning mode - that then switches entirely at about 3:20 (!) into a kind of an OTT spiritual........and then cuts off / fades out at its peak, soaring crescendo.......he sure isn't out of ideas.......

One of the few things in American Rock and Roll worth your time these days.....pretty much a national treasure really...... Finally got around to listening. I like the change of pace here, it’s more of a headbanger. This song just ROCKS relentlessly from beginning to end. My fucking queen. Idk which song to choose as the better one right now but doesn’t matter, just give me the album already

The Reflectors All The Way DownThe Reflectors made a minor Power Pop classic with their debut - a pacinoyes Best of 2020 record - First Impression.........I thought their 2nd record which had strong songs was botched in the recording / performances......and better in the live session release that preceded the 2nd album's release......... but a lot of people liked it even more A brand new song after a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong silence........and it's filled with American Power Pop Goodness.........fnck yeah....... Mattsby who is a fan iirc (of their 2nd album too)

Prog band Myrath released a new album and it's probably the best album of the year for me so far. Pretty great stuff.

Kate Clover Here Comes The Love BombHer most Pop song ever? On her dynamite debut album KC wrote great songs and tried hard to present them "perfectly" ..........now she has written some even better songs (!) and is giving them plenty of room to move and here she applies a bit of structural complexity too: Here Comes The Love Bomb ends with an unexpected musical passage that usually would occur mid-song - after the bridge - but this bridge is longer, weirder, and goes immediately back to the chorus ...... so that ending is a bit of a "double trick" for a Pop song.......pretty cool...but then again........she always is........ Joaquim, @thosewhowantareturntothenewwave1978-1982 - The 2nd link has the vid which isn't on Youtube yet and she looks hot af Joaq www.undertheradarmag.com/news/kate_clover_shares_new_single_here_comes_the_love_bomb

Surely this upcoming album has to be her breakthrough, or at the very least get her past 7k monthly listeners on spotify

Vulfmon, Jacob Jeffries, Harrison Whitford Little Thunder
Harrison Whitford dropped one of my favorite songs of the MAR era - Salvation Army - and while the rest of that album didn’t really live up to that song I was still interested in checking out this new single he dropped with these two other artists who’s work I’m not familiar with. Happy to announce that this collaboration resulted in a really great song. Sounds like something The Byrds could’ve made back in their heyday in the 60s, really captures that vibe

James Sullivan Day Late Dollar ShortJames Sullivan made a pretty good debut with his band More Kicks.......then made a not particularly good solo debut........ and then made a GREAT loud, kick ass record with More Kicks - Punch Drunk (2022) my #8 of that year .......then More Kicks broke up and he's been very quiet.......now he has a new solo single...and a new solo album April 19th Vital Signs Not on Youtube yet but in the link below - Mattsby who liked Punch Drunk so much he might have had it as his #1 of 2022 iirc........song sounds like solo Westerberg with the lick from REM Wolves, Lower thrown in and the fade out noisy solo from Flip Your Wig era Husker Du.......he's got great taste tbh louderthanwar.com/james-sullivan-day-late-dollar-short-single-review-and-video-premiere/

Local Drags Left In The Sun
Lanny Durbin - aka Local Drags (more or less) - made my #3 album of 2023 - the fantastic, bittersweet "Mess of Everything"........
Durbin - at his best - is unlike anyone else in contemporary Power Pop - he writes short, very simple and direct songs about depression that somehow sound oddly fragile and hopeful.........sometimes he turns them into small life affirming triumphs .......
New album May 16th .......

Yeah, I know this is 3 days in a rown with either snippets or just an announcement about new music coming TOMORROW......but if this was The Replacements in '85, The Clash in '79, Pavement in '93 .....we'd be doing this same shit for them too.......not the same rules when you're the best band going ffs
