Lubitsch has influenced Barbie, and Hawkes, and Fellini, and Cukor, and K. Hepburn (we could think about why The Philadelphia Story feels like a more progressive movie than Gerwig's a million years later while we're at it)… the nerve on this girl srsly Also, this film got compared on MAR to Sartre and Camus ffs.........so "seriousness" is not exclusively a pacinoyes thing..........but hey............ what do I know ..............I'm just a simple man ........ I may have missed that bit (I started threads on these two; didn't see barbs come up in those)… but if we're to call BS on this movie whenever we see fit until the end of the awards season, I'm down man

Uploaded on Turner Classic Movies channel (I don't actively seek these see-through interviews): Lubitsch has influenced Barbie, and Hawkes, and Fellini, and Cukor, and K. Observation :Let me see if I have this straight: I get called "too serious" for an obviously joking post (funny too) - saying John Lone shouldn't win a "best" acting poll in 1987 - and she says this ^ with a straight face no less - and will get a BD nod and MAR will actually agree with her I reckon and say "she has so many ideas / influences!" .......ah the privileges of being the auteur ammirite? Also, this film got compared on MAR to Sartre and Camus ffs.........so "seriousness" is not exclusively a pacinoyes thing..........but hey............ what do I know ..............I'm just a simple man ........ I didn't compare the film to Sartre and Camus, I compared it to Simone de Beauvoir. I only mentioned Sartre and Camus in the context of her. Feel free to be direct next time. Passive aggressive tantrums don't look good on you. The John Lone thing was 3 days ago now.

Sorry I relate saying that with Sartre and Camus and equating it as such - perhaps I'm remembering it wrong Passive aggressive tantrums are the only kind of temper tantrums I throw tbh - ah well - keep counting how many days that Lone thing was because I'll b quoting it 150 days from now tbh........probably would have been forgotten but you agreed with that too serious thing so........that probably makes it go a little longer than it would have naturally

Not just holding on to the "too serious" comment when you complained about how people voted on a best performance poll but even holding on to my liking of that comment. This is what puts you a cut above on this board - that's not sarcasm btw.

In a movie about self consciousness I'd have avoided the whole board of directors who looks totally idle in the story.
I saw little girls attending, but I suspect they didn't get what they expected.

You make solid points but while amazing Plemons didn’t sing a Matchbox 20 song in a funny voice or do an extended bit on a toilet. That’s unbeatable. I don’t make the rules

Caught this a while ago. Has made me think of this less as a "Gerwig" movie and more of Robbie's if that makes sense - may explain the lack of interest towards this subject matter (the doll and the brand) to some degree (and how Margot's performance rings truer than her direction)… Like she "found" herself in this project somehow. and in the spirit of pinning their finished product to the GOATs, of course she sees jOan Of ArC in that generic know-it-all 13 y.o girl you can find in any third rate post-forever comedy... Some place it is, inside Greta Gerwig's head

Another "original" movie that feels like a mass-produced hellhole (kinda like EEAAO). I wonder if anyone can tell what it's about? Far from being ironic, it hypes up the capitalist-collectivist dystopia that is Barbieland, with the "real world" just a less shiny, less appealing, equally impersonal version of Barbieland; there's no contrast to anything. (Teletubbies were less creepy than this). At the end of the thing, there's a final corporate twist--a plea for "individuality", for Ken to discover his Ken-ness and Barbie her Barbie-ness. (As if they could ever discover anything interesting! What they should be contemplating if the script followed through with the "death" idea is suicide, and the movie might have ended earlier). But the real utopia being sold is one where no one's feelings get hurt, ever--Barbie X asks Weird Barbie's forgiveness for calling her Weird Barbie (Weird Barbie, btw, hasn't anything remotely singular or individual about her to warrant that name). It's the mushy, vague EEAAO post-human mysticism all over again. This movie has an unbelievable disdain for singularity (also like EEAAO, and I keep comparing them because they're faceless in the same way); what it means by "individuality" is a grotesque sameness. I hate when movies are described as "products" (which happens more and more these days), but in this case, what other tag fits?? It's a Product with capital P. (I didn't bother to type "Greta Gerwig" since it doesn't seem like anybody directed this). Major props to Ryan Gosling who manages to retain his movie star charisma in the middle of this.

Anybody else notice that Robbie kind of slips into a New York accent sometimes in this. Pretty strange for an Australian.

Javi I don't understand your Teletubbies criticism. Basically the movie just brought back visual memories of that. That said, psychedelic pastoral idyll > plastic dystopia

You wrote "teletubbies were less creepy than this", they aren't supposed to be creepy in the slightest. This isn't an original frame. Martin Stett JaviTeletubbies are for toddlers who recognize them as similar to them (clothes, simple language and so on); there's total lack of aggressive behavior and the environment has vivid colors and no distracting element. Besides, the real life clip (shown twice because little children like repetition) shows kids doing something positive. I suppose you never watched them.

This isn't an original frame. Not directly from the show, but it's from the cover of the black metal album that they put out.

Finally saw this at theatre today. Great set pieces. Beautiful set pieces. The script was not funny and was a mess.
