so yeah, this is legitimately great. has to be one of the funniest movies i’ve seen. whole cast was aces and you can tell they had a blast with it, as did the entire theatre.
the ending got quite emotional too, my gf said it almost brought her to tears. the way the movie was able to effortlessly switch between tones was impressive.

Saw it last night, wasn’t good. Wasn’t bad either. Ryan Gosling deserves all the plaudits but even this performance is being a bit overhyped. Margot Robbie was good too but it’s not her best work either. For a summer blockbuster yea it’s a great performance, but people need to chill. Gosling was the only truly great thing about this tbh but I still enjoyed myself for the most part. 6/10

This movie apparently has a Steve Malkmus / Pavement reference I heard today (?) which makes me far more likely to one day actually watch this than Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling ever did ......

It was a great deal of fun, and for the first time I am finally on Greta Gerwig's wavelength. Robbie's best since I, Tonya, and Gosling is endlessly delightful.

Super fun. Gerwig really made this work as a whole. And Gosling is hilarious and I loved his performance, but I don’t really see him being nominated for Supporting Actor. But lol at all the suggestions of mid actors just because they more looked like Ken.

I really enjoyed it, but it’s also a bit overrated but that’s ok. It’s a fun movie, and that’s all that matters
I did end up crying bc Margot’s take on Barbie was so endearing and emotionally impactful. She’s easily one of the best actors under 40, and this movie elevated her to another level and showcased her talent and versatility
Ryan Gosling was hilarious, and he seems to be getting more praise for his performance than Margot. I get why, but Margot carried this film. Shoutout to America Ferrera and Michael Cera (his little dance during the dance party scene was adorable). The best supporting actor talk for Gosling is kind of a joke. I just don’t think it’s an Oscar performance even though he did a really good job
My only issue has to do with two moments I personally didn’t like, and I wish Greta was more confident and didn’t feel the need to pander to the chronically online crowd. Oh and I didn’t like the casting of Simu Liu and Hari Nef. The latter is especially obnoxious both on and off screen. I don’t think she’s a good actor
Overall, this is a fun movie with heart. The acting elevates the movie. It wouldn’t have worked without Margot’s performance. I love her even more after watching this film

Loved this movie. A total blast with a ton of visual and narrative creativity, some of the finest work of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's respective careers (fully support all the Oscar talk for both of them), and a shockingly intricate dive into Beauvoirian existentialism. One of the most remarkable things about all of it is that it found a way to be under 2 hours. Only criticism I can make of it is I think the Will Ferrell Mattel subplot doesn't work terribly well and feels by far the most on-the-nose out of everything. The fact he is a complete non-factor in the third act only reinforces my feelings on that, but that whole dalliance at least offers us one of the best parts of the movie - Ruth - and it doesn't take up too much runtime. A pleasant surprise that this feels like Gerwig's best and in some ways even more fundamentally personal than Lady Bird.

Still haven't seen this but ......this category is a bit wacko.....
It's a mass delusion that this category his going to get filled with all villainous men - I'm not saying Gosling doesn't get nodded but he trails RDJ and Bobby D by a lot and Magaro imo - who is not only not villianous, but he's actually virtuous - and so many heavy hitters are still to come........you'd have to assume Saltburn or The Color Purple or Maestro or The Holdovers - or something - all will fight hard against the Gosling Tide - who already is an undernominated actor for his career.......
I'm a big Gosling fan........but to say that actor, for that role in that movie is a lock is a bit of a stretch imo knowing what's coming up .......guys in 3rd place in July - at best ........don't usually hang around in deep years anyway

I think he's top 3 at the moment tbh, but it will be interesting to see the state of the race in a few months time. Honestly, if we're ending up with a 'Covid-type year', than Ferrera could make a play too (for the nom).

Starting off with dazzling sets and eye-popping colors and some very witty plays on the Barbie ethos - "I've only ever wanted everything to stay exactly as it is forever!" - this is fun at the start ......but not actually that funny........more like nudging you in the ribs clever .........we leave Barbieland way too early (30 minutes?).........and when she gets to the real world it's initially fish out of water funny in a more cutting way (not being able to articulate "self-conscious" ........... "I do not have a vagina! We do not have genitals!")So 45 minutes in - all is going well so far and deepening too.........but after Mattel arrives it becomes way more preachy and far less amusing or even entertaining actually - it becomes sort of manic and tiring - and it pays much lesser cinematic dividends too - what was colorful and buoyant starts to turn garish and leaden, what once was winking clever now starts to grate and annoy.........though still with some occasionally ace random one liners (Gosling's "A car I'd like to have actually" and um.......Scary Preggo Midge near the end etc) So it's like half a good movie and half too much cotton candy ......... What is actually most humorous about the movie is that it starts with Barbie contemplating Death - and you could argue with all she's seen in the real world it should make her rip off her own head and end it all......but that's probably too dark I guess Missed opportunity: Not including Elvis Costello's "Tear off You Own Head - It's A Doll Revolution"

Too superficial for my liking. Except some meta jokes i didn't find it that funny. Ferrera's monologue scene, Ryan Gosling's performance, some emotion late in the film, the sets and costumes and a clever ending are worth talking about. Pales in comparison with Greta's previous two films- 6.5/10

I'd be surprised if this gets more than production design, costume and song noms. Gosling's good but i didn't even find him nom worthy.

My first Gerwig.
The opening third of it was promising, and Robbie and (especially) Gosling were charming... America Ferrara and Ariana Greenblatt were not though, and the movie gets more and more preachy as it goes along. Is Greta always this annoying? Did her partner leave all of his writing talent behind in 2019? (Appearantly not, as Ferrara gets a "hard-hitting" speech as embarassing as Laura Dern's Oscar-winning one).
Summer "fun"... more like summer division between sexes. To think that people cry at this...
