12 nominations Jack Nicholson
9 nominations Al Pacino Denzel Washington
7 nominations Jeff Bridges Robert De Niro Robert Duvall Dustin Hoffman
6 nominations Michael Caine Daniel Day-Lewis Leonardo DiCaprio Tom Hanks Anthony Hopkins
5 nominations Morgan Freeman Gene Hackman Sean Penn
So... We all assume that DiCaprio and Washington will only continue to rise, right? Bale, Bardem, Phoenix, and Pitt all seem likely to join the list, as well. Watch out for Willem Dafoe!

I imagine Bradley Cooper will be joining the 5+ club next year.

First, wow at that Mickey pic. Leo will be moving up soon. Cruise doesn't have five?

First, wow at that Mickey pic. He was the man back in the day - 9 1/2 Weeks! And Cruise has three nominations as of now - Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia.

I believe that Peter O'Toole (8), Richard Burton (7), and Albert Finney (5) are the actors with the most nominations without any wins? All of the living actors on this list have won.

I think Washington ends up at around 10 - maybe 11 - but I don't think he catches Jack's 12.
Particularly if he wins on his 10th......but I said this before no one with 2 deserves a 3rd not even Blanchett ......but getting to the magic 10 mark seems safe......
DiCaprio is the harder to read one because I've said this before too .........the 3 BA male Oscar record - is THE toughest record to catch for male actors - not just an Oscar record - harder than Nicholson's 12 Oscar nods........harder than Pacino's 5 Triple Crown wins.........harder than Day-Lewis's 4 BAFTA BA wins.......if DiCap wins this year, that's 2 BA wins under 50......it's a very big deal ..............but it also may be where he stops being the guy who keeps racking them up .......Hoffman and Penn found that 2nd BA Oscar was their peak.
Just sayin........
Like Denzel 10 nods seems safe.......though DiCap's ceiling is harder to gauge.......

harder than Pacino's 5 Triple Crown wins......... Don't forget that Maggie Smith and Glenn Close (should) have the Triple Crown winning record with 7.

What's fun is those marks will all be obliterated fairly soon......in this "awards crazy era" ..... I think Mirren's Double Triple Crown is the Gold Standard "hardest to get one" for females but really - how hard is that even? - Rylance could have it for the men ........and likely will one day ........ Jodie Comer is - I think - going to get 1 /3 of the way just this year (Olivier and Tony) and she's not even 30.......she has both TV awards already Yanno Tyler, someone who likes Kristen Stewart should do a poll comparing those 2 actresses - both under 35 - but who here has the testicular fortitude for such a discussion? ..........one day though when Comer has more feature work ........that is going to be the raging debate on MAR I reckon.......

I think Denzel has a good chance of tying or surpassing NIcholson's 12 nominations.

Does the list include producer credits? No, I don't include those when discussing Acting nominations. (I.e. Triple Crown nominations, etc.)

Does the list include producer credits? Obviously no. It wouldn't be fair to those actors from the past and those who don't produce movies.

Ed Harris hasn't been nominated for awhile but he's still a relevant enough actor who has appeared in recent Oscar contenders (The Lost Daughter, Top Gun: Maverick). I could picture him being able to score another Supporting actor nod in the near future.
Gary Oldman also seems like someone who could get nominated a few more times in his lifetime.

This will be the director's first feature film, though, so I'm trying to temper my expectations...

I'm cautiously optimistic because Harris and Foster are such perfect casting on paper and the former has been overdue for a win and the latter for his first nomination for so long, and the roles are excellent. But it's going to be a challenge because Lange is so theatrical and what works on stage doesn't necessarily translate to the screen, and it takes a special kind of director to transition between stage and screen successfully.

Well, you know Jessica Lange's performances typically rock me to my very core (in a good way!), and it was her West End contacts that made the film possible in the first place. My hesitation lies solely with the unseasoned director... I wish it were someone like Pablo Larraín at the helm.

My hesitation lies solely with the unseasoned director... I wish it were someone like Pablo Larraín at the helm. I am usually much more hesitant on Lange, but in this instance, I have no doubt in her capabilities to nail the role. Her stage notices were unanimous raves and it's the sort of role that, just by reading it, you can envision exactly what Lange would do with it and it would work . . . but it would also run the very real risk of dominating the film in a way that Long Day's Journey Into Night shouldn't be dominated. Now luckily, Foster and Harris aren't known for being shrinking violets on-screen. They are dynamos in their own way. But yes, in this instance, it all comes down to the director.

stephen - I didn't realize that the director in question, Jonathan Kent, is also directing A German Life with Maggie Smith, written by Christopher Hampton (currently in production)... Could be a huge return to form for Smith, too!

Apologies for the multiple posts on this topic (on my own thread, no less! ), but he also directed Kristin Scott Thomas in an Alan Bennett 'Talking Heads' piece for television... Scott Thomas, Lange, Smith... Talk about an actress lover's dream trifecta. I need to see this ASAP!

Just wanted to give a quick update - KST was absolutely spellbinding in this... her performance left me rapt. I quite liked Kent's direction here, too - very interested to see what he would do with a feature length film and more than one actor. stephen

Washington can reach 10 or 11, but he's nearing 70.
DiCaprio is the only one who could potentially reach or even surpass Nicholson.

Potentially moving up on/entering this list in 2023...
Bradley Cooper (5) Willem Dafoe (5) Robert De Niro (8) Leonardo DiCaprio (7)
Longer shots...
Joaquin Phoenix (5)
Any others I'm missing?
