Should we have a lead v. supporting thread? Do we have any borderline cases? I think we can all agree that Jamie Foxx is category fraud. If Collateral is supporting, so is Ray. Cruise is maybe a borderline case. He has a lot of screentime, but it's all from Foxx's perspective. I have him in supporting, but others might feel different.

here's the lead vs. supporting thread for those asking. The only borderline case in my lineups is Emily Blunt in My Summer of Love. She's currently my #10 in lead but I don't think she'd make my top seven in supporting either. Stacked year for actresses.

Just voted. The acting categories are so incredibly stacked this year that I had to leave out several performances that would have easily made my lineups in any other year of this decade. This is probably my favourite year for film from the 21st century as well. It has great films in abundance.

any more song FYCs? have nothing to go off of except the Globe/Oscar lineups which were both awful, and I've seen 50+ movies from this year but have no idea which ones had original songs (except for Million Voices from Hotel Rwanda, which.... no)

ok, one last post: thanks again idioticbunny for the song FYCs... some stuff there that helped build my lineup. I still would like to see what other people are thinking because I'm sure there's a lot great options I just haven't heard/found yet. I did a cursory scan of the 2004 films I've seen and didn't find much. That being said, my research has led me to a few gems, most notably those two House of Flying Daggers songs, "Promise of the World" from Howl's Moving Castle (sung by Kimura Youmi), and the Oscar winner "Al Otro Lado Del RÃo" from Motorcycle Diaries.

It's not a song, but Hana and Alice had better get in for original score.

The movie on a whole may not be particularly good, but Thomas Newman's score shouldn't be forgotten.

I am putting songs that are exclusively from this thread on my ballot. I listened to the Oscar choices and ewwwwwwww. Unless anyone has some other suggestions?
Edit: This isn't all that good, but in the interests of variety:
Edit 2: Is this original?

Does anyone know if the Kamikaze Girls songs are original? She Said, Lucie Est Amoureuse, Hola Hola, A Place for Me and You. Near as I can find out, all of the above are original, but info is scarce.
Ah, I just found out Yoko Kanno did the score, and she often fits loads of original songs into her soundtracks (if TV was eligible, I'd be pimping the shit out of the soundtrack to Wolf's Rain right now). Definitely considering all of these original.
By the way: Costuming and makeup. Do remember this for costuming and makeup.

Does anyone know if the Kamikaze Girls songs are original? As far as I can tell they're original songs, as no source I could find claimed otherwise. And I'm glad you were a fan of all the stuff I recommended this year (which more people should watch). I didn't expect it, since out tastes generally differ quite a bit.

Your don't just like what everyone else likes, so it's fun to go off the beaten path. I believe that I have the reputation of not liking anything (Deep Archer joked about that on the top 100 thread and others have accused me of this as well), so most people would say that my tastes differ quite a bit from theirs. BTW, I watched Mysteries of Lisbon on Monday and it was pretty great. Captivating all the way through, although in retrospect it is fading from memory.

Raul Ruiz is quite a unique director, as, in his films he is interested mostly in the subconscious, in dreams, memories, ect. and that is what he mainly explores in his work. So his films have a kind of stream of consciousness vibe and can appear quite loose and scattershot plotwise. Actually, I think Mysteries Of Lisbon is one of his more compact works, but as with every other Raul Ruiz film it's the journey that counts, not the destination. If you let yourself drift into it's collage of intertwining stories and images, the experience will always be unique and fascinating, even if you don't remeber much of it afterwards. Raul Ruiz' films are one of a kind.

Alright, final song push for KG as I finalize my lineups. I'm also giving it high marks in A LOT of categories, so I'll go post it in glorious 240p on the movie archive thread (there's a higher quality version on OK.RU but it doesn't have subtitles). And here is the opening credits song, Roller Coaster Ride. It was released a week after the movie, so I think it's safe to say that it is original for the film. soundcloud.com/thebrilliantgreen/roller-coaster-ride

2004 is a weird year for me. The dramas don't work but the comedies DO. My ensemble nominees include Mean Girls, Anchorman, and Dodgeball
