I sat down today and decided to play long albums by Radiohead, Wilco, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend and then I remembered I liked hooks and those songs were really long and I don't have the attention span and .......oh look a bird. The hookiest song of the moment .......if that moment was...... 1964........1994......2014........2020. Great title too:

The Speedways Empty Pages
Look ..........you either get it or you don't and if you don't .......well you're fncked and doomed to check out "alternative" (yeah right) albums that Pitchfork for fncksake tells you are cool (they're not) while wearing dad jeans at 25.
Is that what you want?
2020 continues to be an amazing year for the Power-Pop single and this one by a reunited The Speedways totally gets what you should have a long time ago - one super poppy hook after another and a video with scenes from The Family Way starring an impossibly lovely Hayley Mills from 1960 something.

Best song off the 1,097th Guided By Voices release in the last 3 years - or something like that. Sounding very peak period '94/'95 here:

King's Disease, the new Nas, is pretty good. There's a Pacino and De Niro mention in 27 Summers, Til the War is Won a bit sad, The Definition swift and angry, “Eartha Kitt woulda been finished with ‘em” - album ends pretty strong with three tight produced ones, 10 Points, The Cure, Spicy. Getting very positive reviews so far too.

Dad & daughter and their dogs with another quarantine song which is actually fairly funny (she sings about how she doesn't like it and how she's not going crazy). Will they make a follow-up as good as Kicks, Hits, and Fits in 2021......hmmmmmmm, you never know.....

3rd song posted from this album in this thread........this song is a kind of antisocial genius and I've been playing it constantly lately but I'm really very friendly.

New Deftones is amazing. It's their same pounding alt/metal shoegazy sound but channeled in a new direction here toward something uplifting and even euphoric. Haven't been listening to much of their stuff lately after the lukewarm Gore, but this album might be the thing to pull me back in.

In a World Without Love It's Hard To Stay Young The Speedways - Radio SoundsYeah them again - currently at #2 behind Dylan in my 2020 top 10 album list and Dylan doesn't really count yanno? .......also the best song title of the year and like all fantastic songs about girls there is something quirky to it so you remember it......he's in love with a girl wearing "silver shoes"............... AND it has a great opening line too "Something happened to the pop music on the radio."Damn right.

Chuck Prophet High As Johnny Thunders
Making his 2nd appearance on the 2020 thread living sort of (not quite) legend Chuck Prophet with a lovely slow dance ballad and his heart in the right place.

The Reflectors - Radio Transmissions: Live @ KXLU - "Carry On"Their 2nd release of the year - sort of like a Peel Sessions without John Peel - and they already have my favorite debut studio record of the year anyway - every other young worthy band is on studio record #2. Their Facebook says the 5 "new songs" here are due for THEIR 2nd studio album (already?) and they're pretty stellar and encouraging if you gravitate to this stuff ......... very 1978 sounding, simple and sugary. This live setting suits them too ....... some of the songs from First Impression are improved even with ragged and less polished performances (It's Alright).

You might not know this, but what's the deal with Mills and Hywel Bennett? They were in so many movies together! Guess they had chemistry and just kept at it.

New from the great Ike Reilly - don't think this is from his forthcoming album but maybe .......it seems a more timely one-off song though.......he does preview some new stuff in his most recent "family concert" show which is on Youtube also.

Beautiful song, beautifully simple video. Just watched twice in a row.... I could watch Ike strut the streets for at least an hour, always wished he'd get a part in a movie....

It's been a long time since Jeff Tweedy hasn't bored me - but this low key charmer is sweet and winning.
You never can tell can ya......solo album end of October.

New Queers ........at about 30 years of American Pop-Punk greatness now, 2 minute songs about girls and their impeccable Ramones worship and of course they go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year too......I mean if they can afford to buy tickets to get in of course

Take It On The Chin The MangesWhy is pacinoyes being so nice lately? Is he sick? Where are the rants and the "negativity"? Well........ok: New from The Manges who I've called Italy's best Rock band (who's 2nd?!?)........ and here they are at their absolute Ramones/Screeching Weasel best with a nostalgic throwback song that actually beats the sh it out of Bruce Springsteen's new "Ghosts" which is, with all due respect - and I'm a fan - a nostalgic piece of fncking junk. The Manges actually cover the same thematic ground, without trying so hard or getting all caught up in their mushy middle aged feelings, and they do it in under 2 minutes ........one is going to be in Rolling Stone getting 4 and 1/2 stars and one is going to have 172 views on Youtube....

L.A. Witch Motorcycle BoyVery few Rock bands - much less a band from Los Angeles sound "dangerous" in 2020 - but this new song by psych-throwback specialists L.A. Witch is like a Halloween song without remotely trying........all quavering, shoe-gaze like vocals and Goth-y subversion of old Black Sabbath/White Stripes/Gun Club riffs. It's kind of awesome actually, spooky and nothing else in 2020 sounds quite like it either.....

Exploding Flowers Far, But Never Gone
Sounding sort of like every 80s/early 90s American (and New Zealand!) jangle pop band thrown into a blender and coming up with one of 2020s loveliest creations here. They don't sustain it on the album as much - but sometimes they do .......and if they ever come up with 11 of these - well they'd have their very own College Rock classic album wouldn't they?

best track off the new Flaming Lips record which has been out for awhile. Based on an experience Wayne Coyne had while working at a fast-food restaurant and being held up, and thinking of his mother in that moment and that he was going to die. Hits the heartstrings in a special way. "Remember to let the dogs outside, 'Cause I won't be there tonight." A simple line but it cuts through so much bullshit because that's where heartbreak hits the hardest; in how loss disrupts everyday routines because simple tasks become constant reminders of that absence.

The Pixies Mambo Sun
The Pixies made 2 great records in the 80s and T. Rex made 2 great ones in the 70s - both had weird lyrics that often were in another language (or made English sound like another language).......so a perfect match for a (new) cover:

2020 might have sucked but I dunno, this is the SECOND new Queers song in this thread - and this one co-written by Ben Weasel who made a fine comeback record this year himself........and which is like John Lennon teaming up with Jagger-Richards to write a bubblegum pop song for your 11 year old sister and her friends to like while they paint their nails. These guys are almost 60 ........wtf ........grow up already.......never grow up....
