Pacino, Brando, Shakespeare, The Irishman ending, Howlin' Wolf, Bride of Frankenstein, "accordion noir" which I never heard before and now need. What a great review, written as if just to get MA droolin'.

New Phoebe Bridgers out a day early Easy AOTY contender of course ... as I suspected when she played it on that IG livestream or whatever it was some time back, this final track is probably the standout for me and is an all-timer album closer ... so, so overwhelmingly cathartic, and some of the finest lyrics she's penned to date:

New Dylan is out and yeah it's pretty great - very Love & Theft-ish and maybe as good or better and that was an album of the decade contender (2001) and Rock records were better then so........ we have a new #1 of the year on my list anyway....it will take a while to fully digest but already this is a major record in his catalog and it's funny too....believe the hype....

Can't wait to listen to the new Dylan album - both I Contain Multitudes and Murder Most Foul are definitely among 2020's best new songs for me

New Phoebe Bridgers out a day early Yes! I have listened to it a few times now and it's really, really good. Not sure yet if I like it more than her first album but it seems like it's a grower. ICU is probably my favorite track as of yet.

F8ck you pacinoyes with your opinions on movies ......and bands .......and politics and.....um......wrestling ....I am not a fan of yours!! But ..........you do sometimes look great for your age - 182 - and you do post good newish bands.....and this is one Australia's power pop specialists the awfully named The Stroppies who remind me sorta of a band like a sunnier Yo Lo Tengo or The Feelies - and whose last album caused quite a stir in jangle pop circles......you know who you are......

This the 3rd song from one of 2020 most anticipated releases and every song sounds unique yet only like them - Ireland's Fontaines D.C. - a cross between their Fall/Joy Division aesthetic - this is going to be a major record it seems...... best young band in the world (maybe) on album 2.
Release a month away ....

Paul Weller as British a guy as you can imagine - does a song about California (?) and it sort of is like Steely Dan or a Michael McDonald Jazz Pop (or his former band The Style Council) .....and I kind of like it actually.......this is his 26th solo album (!) and some of the best reviews he's had in a long time and he usually gets good reviews for 40+ years now...........and this is basically unrecognizable as what you may know of the great Paul Weller.
Contrarian Bastard..........song takes 45 seconds plus to "really" start

This boards a little goofy in the head tbh .......if the singer of a band I liked dropped a new song I'd be all over that sh it. But when Will Butler of The Arcade Fire a guy with a huge fanbase who I never thought about much (ever) drops a new song with a sincere but also damn near terrifying political POV (to me at least) in the subtitles and I have to be the one to post it .....come on.......we are a broken board my friends. ......and this is 3 days old.

Wye Oak main gal Jenn Wasner's other project Flock of Dimes being beautiful and haunting with waves of achingly lovely sounds washing over us all for a rainy day .........and other such things that pacinoyes doesn't really care about ........but you know who you are and this is like comfort food for many and an 8.0 coming from Pitchfork one day and this is absolutely made for those who still can't figure out that 2020 Jeff Rosenstock record or doubt how good that upcoming Fontaines D.C. record might be that I'm likely to be raving about in 2 weeks .......... Album imminent.....

The Pretenders Hate For Sale dropped yesterday and it's.... awesome?? Starts out with some serious rocking out, while lining up in the lyrics a bit of the forward fear at play ("That's what demons do" ; “I can only tell you’re real from the scratching” ) and across styles and ends with three great, catchy, sad, droll songs. The coolest grandma on the scene:

Another new song for today - Cali slavish Raspberries/The Quick worshippers The Cocktails album is a front loaded Power Pop record whose energy (and concept) flags about half way through - but Power Pop is like COVID-19 in 2020 - it's everywhere, there's no vaccine and in this song, no ones going to the movies either.
The best songs on this are of note and this is track number 2 that rips off the descending/ascending singing/music of Joyce Manor around the time of Never Hung Over Again (mid 2010s) - they aren't usually swiped by Power Pop bands....or thought of as one themselves.....but that's a shrewd move.

New single released yesterday; supposedly plays in the latest season of 13 Reasons Why.
Not my fav from them but kinda enjoyable, sunny. Had me at "Too much coffee."

Brad Marino is a sort of Power-Pop big fish in a small pond from his band The Connection - who basically kept this music alive almost by themselves in the 2010s. Well I missed his new solo single/EP in 2020......and since I always push Power Pop as a preferred genre and I said in 2020 this sound is everywhere this year.
This is the kind of song he regularly cranks out so if you never heard of him or The Connection there's some fun catching up to do on his discography......and right when this song starts you see the Nick Lowe boxset in his cd collection because..... well what do YOU think he would listen to?

It's not new but it sort of is.......and we've never heard it except on awful bootlegs - August 8th - 1970 - 50 years ago the original Stooges play their last show. After this - there's nothing from Iggy for 3 years and in those 3 years..........Lou Reed leaves the Velvets.......glam T.Rex emerges.........Bowie rises..........Alice Cooper peaks........The Dolls form.
This show, where they play Fun House comes out 50 years to the day (almost - August 7th).....nothing else in 2020 will sound quite this primal.

Taylor Swift's folklore deserves a mention, easily her best effort yet (haven't heard all of her older stuff though).

2020 has smoked the last few years ALREADY - and we have a ton of strong comeback records from artists long dormant too - X, Screeching Weasel and dropping tomorrow The Psychedelic Furs who made 2 marvelous-ish records (their first 2) and here they resurrect their sound on their first record since.......1991. By the way they have toured for like 20 years and are still great live and don't just play the hits either.....if you ever wanted to pick up a slightly goth single Mom well she'll be at this show.

8.1 on $hitfork which is about a bit too low I reckon and this album does not lend itself to random songs - it has to be played at 2:45 AM all the way through - the album of individual songs is their first. But.....this 2 minute poem, heartbreaking and lovely and utterly at odds with any contemporary of theirs shows how bracing and odd a record they've made.
I guarantee you years from now when people pour over this record and people pick their favorite tracks you'll meet an uncanny amount who will pick this and you'll think you were the only one - that's how specific they are.

What is going on with 2020 - yet ANOTHER comeback record - this time The Go-Gos..........first in nearly 20 years and they drop the F word ("zero fncks given" is the line) which means those reunion tours must have really earned a lot for them to slip this into their set so every suburban soccer/home schooling mom can sing along. This is the zippiest and most girl power-y they've sounded since Vacation and that was way before Belinda's unfortunate pop diva phase
