I think she has a real shot - she's not on my list atm but on the bubble - and I'm thinking it actually may be at Awkwafina's expense (the irony!) if she gets that nod - that movie wasn't good but her performance was imo and I would say as ferociously OTT and actor-y as any I've seen this year .......I mean you could almost laugh at how hard she's trying in that role (or why she is bothering even actually - it's ripe for parody). It already feels like a parody. It's so OTT that just to imitate it is to parody it. You can't get more tryhard with that performance. Will never understand what people see in it. The effort is so distracting. It's like Peele asked her to come in at 110% and she came in at 300% Her non-tethered performance was good though. It's your basic Person-in-Peril horror performance but it got the job done.

That's the kind of role that calls for you to play it at 110. It's like saying Ledger in TDK was over the top and should have reined it in.

I can see her getting a SAG nom instead of Erivo or even Renee but come Oscar noms, the older voters are gonna support those others.
Side note - Not a big fan of her perf though she's pretty good in some scenes, but wow her perf in Little Monsters is one of the very worst of the year.

For one thing, Joker actually feels somewhat like a realized person, albeit a deranged and theatrical one, and there's basis to that kind of performative characterization. Red is just a collection of affectatious tics with the disembodied voice of a dehydrated trucker. She isn't menacing OR charismatic.

I would be shocked if she was nominated but I did think she was one of the film's few bright spots, along with the music.

If Collette couldn't do it even with ton of critic wins and mentions, I don't think Nyong'o would ever make it.

She's certainly entered the conversation and I also think we should have more consideration for Peele sneaking in a Screenplay nod. Original Screenplay is a seemingly thin field this year, after Parasite, Marriage Story, and OUATIH there's two spots that are totally up for grabs as far as I'm concerned -- Peele's a very recent past winner, is generally popular and well-respected, Us was a big hit and it's a very "showy" screenplay. It's totally the type of thing that gets recognized in this category and I think its chances have probably gone underestimated.

Knives Out?

I for one am pleased with the critics and SAG love for Lupita. But do you think she will ultimately get nominated for an Oscar?

Yes I think so. Zellweger/Johansson/Theron/Ronan/Nyong'o.

I still think she's on the bubble. If she gets into BAFTA, I'd say she slides into fifth place, but with Johansson, Zellweger and Theron seeming safe, there's only two slots left and both Awkwafina and Erivo have stronger movies and/or baitier roles than she does, and Ronan is poised for a late-season surge.

She got SAG and Critic Choice noms. One could argue she missed Globes because of genre confusion (Us missed Picture- Comedy as well).

I think she sneaks in over Awkwafina or Ervio. I'm leaning toward Ervio getting snubbed. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of passion for Harriet. It helps that Awkwafinia practically has the Comedy/Musical Globe handed to her on a silver platter (unless Ana De Armas spoils).
