I mean, far be it for me to agree with the world's pre-eminent Emma Stone hater, but I think there's a very good chance Phoenix misses for this. Not because he'll be bad, but the guy notoriously hates the Oscar campaign trail and the Academy finally gave him the big prize so there's probably no urgency for them to follow up with him here. I think Gaga will be where the Oscar push coalesces in terms of this movie, and I think Joaquin will be more than happy to direct his energies that way. I mean, I don't think Phoenix is winning #2 for this or anything (he's no Emma Stone) but I see no reason to doubt a nomination if the enthusiasm for the film itself is there. Which I'm sure it will be. It's the same heavy bait but now with the element of singing and dancing thrown in there as well. I'm positive the Academy will bite. It's very possible but it is rare for an actor to be nominated twice for the same role, and again, I think the hurdle is Phoenix not wanting to take part in the song-and-dance (ha!) of awards season again. I do think he's a cinch for a Globe nod, though, and how cool would it be if he won the Comedy/Musical Globe after winning the Drama Globe for the same part?!

Count me in on the Phoenix doubt.

Will see how it turns out... it seems lighter on "We Live in a Society!" (gud) and heavier on dreamy sequences (ugh) like a F'd-up La La Land... too early to diss Gaga... but Phoenix seems as reliable as ever. Ha Ha Land

I think it's rare mainly because films that get recognized by the Academy barely get sequels, or when they do they steer into a less Oscar-friendly direction like the Rocky series. But as soon as that franchise became serious again Stallone got another nod for his signature role. Then you have Crosby, Pacino, Newman and Blanchett, that isn't that bad a record with that in mind.
Still agree that a Phoenix nom is not very likely due to the other reasons you mentioned.

The trailer launch for “Joker: Folie à Deux” was no laughing matter for Warner Bros. The marketing for the studio’s upcoming DC sequel, headlined by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, got off to a stellar start with 167 million viewers in its first 24 hours. The teaser trailer went online right after it debuted at Warner Bros.’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.
Sources tell Variety that the “Joker” sequel’s trailer numbers and social engagement surpassed that of the first “Barbie” trailer to become Warner Bros.’ biggest launch in recent years. The release was no doubt bolstered by Lady Gaga’s massive 150 million follower social media footprint. The trailer instantly became the #1 trending video on YouTube on premiere night and currently boasts 15.6 million views and counting on that platform alone, where it remains the #4 trending video nearly two days after its launch.

I wish the new PTA and Tarantino films could make these numbers.

I wish the new PTA and Tarantino films could make these numbers. But they're not filmmakers on the same level of mastery as Todd Phillips

Some people were actually saying this was going to flop...... I wish the new PTA and Tarantino films could make these numbers. But they're not filmmakers on the same level of mastery as Todd Phillips As much as I love PTA I think he would reach another level if he'd finally realize that we live in a society and have a character (possibly played by DDL in a comeback role) tell us so in one of his films.

The only movie I like as much as movies about societies are movies that have scenes. Can't wait.
