Is GaGa the frontrunner at this point? Both are lucky Jessica Lange is postponed. Hard to imagine a Gaga or Ronan performance on par with peak Jessica Lange. But I think Ronan is leading Gaga.

Laughing and crying simultaneously is the best reaction I can think of to living in a society.

I'm only mildly, if that, interested in the film at this venture, but trailers for trailers should be considered an international crime.

I just hope that Mark Friedberg, the production designer, finally gets a nomination for this. Dude's been doing excellent work for years (Far from Heaven, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Across the Universe, Synecdoche New York, Noah) but hasn't been recognized yet, not even for the first Joker where PD was basically its only tech snub. Maybe those musical numbers will finally do the trick.

I've said it before, but Joker has my favourite contemporary production design in years and I truly consider it an all-timer in that regard, and he looks like he's bringing it here as well.

A wild Steve Coogan appears Also, weird that there wasn't a single shot of Keener or Beetz.

LOL'd at them doing the stair dance together from the first movie Hopefully "THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT" is what he says immediately after finally saying we live in a society.

Will see how it turns out... it seems lighter on "We Live in a Society!" (gud) and heavier on dreamy sequences (ugh) like a F'd-up La La Land...
too early to diss Gaga... but Phoenix seems as reliable as ever.

Is 1970s New York contemporary though?
Not a fan of the first one but the cinematography paying such heavy hommage to La La Land (among One from the Heart, Umbrellas of Cherbourg and New York, New York) got me intrigued for this. Looks gorgeous.

This time Phoenix won't be nominated for this. I mean, far be it for me to agree with the world's pre-eminent Emma Stone hater, but I think there's a very good chance Phoenix misses for this. Not because he'll be bad, but the guy notoriously hates the Oscar campaign trail and the Academy finally gave him the big prize so there's probably no urgency for them to follow up with him here. I think Gaga will be where the Oscar push coalesces in terms of this movie, and I think Joaquin will be more than happy to direct his energies that way.

I mean, I don't think Phoenix is winning #2 for this or anything (he's no Emma Stone) but I see no reason to doubt a nomination if the enthusiasm for the film itself is there. Which I'm sure it will be. It's the same heavy bait but now with the element of singing and dancing thrown in there as well. I'm positive the Academy will bite.
