This story from its start up to now (and probably for at least a bit longer) demonstrates the major pitfall of new media: people make and fortify opinions on stories unfolding in real-time. Not just uniquely huge stories like the O.J. trial, but everything and there is a real cost to that when the water cooler is now the entire digital world. It's like if people felt the need to tweet their opinion after every scene of a movie instead of just watching it play out, only these news stories actually affect peoples' lives. I have little to no clue what the fuck is going on with Smollett, and honestly even if I did know I'm not sure what I'd have to do with that information, so I'm just going to wait until the smoke clears. I know what you're saying here but I disagree rather strongly. First, the traditional media botched this story, CNN etc. - that's what is scary. The initial lie, the "hate crime" was the part they got wrong. CNN etc. got this story wrong, not Twitter, which just served as a big gossip tank but CNN is our National news agency and they get a lot wrong lately - this, Mueller, Covington, etc. But the explanation is far simpler than people are making out on here - a douchebag with no criminal record, played a prank on himself, the city didn't want to bother with it, kept his money, someone in the prosecutor's office flipped the bird to the police. Happens everyday and not just in Chicago. It is part of the color problem in this country, and the color is green. Not only does that color enable the aforementioned douchebag to see himself as "fighting for equality" (um)............ it allows him to not see his rather repulsive unequal privilege at all. The fuck are you talking about? His bond $10,000. It probably cost a lot more for the overall investigation to take place. It's also a massive dent to the reputation of the Chicago prosecutor's office. What's happening is somebody has got dirt on someone because that Smollett twat is far from innocent?

Nobody said he was innocent I said the opposite rather.
The police don't say he's innocent, the prosecution doesn't even say he innocent. I think they thought a messy trial maybe would have been more of a dent, so they made a call to go this way, and eat the loss, it's a horrendous call but I don't think he actually has dirt on anybody. He could, if that comes out, that's an even better story .....better for this thread at least.

When I say new media, I'm not talking about new sources of information (i.e. people on Twitter), I'm talking about new mediums to spread information like the internet. CNN and all other major news agencies are not strictly traditional media at this point, they use new media just as much if not more now to spread their information. Most people didn't hear about Jussie Smollett's supposed attack from a breaking news bulletin while watching Anderson Cooper, they read it on their phones and computers. As for an explanation, you do you and go for it, man. I don't care to find an explanation right now immediately after the fact, I'm resigned to waiting it out and letting the dust settle on this one. This case is not urgent enough for me to feel the need to come to some judgment.

Well that's sort of an interesting way to look at it - but it's not (to me) as interesting or troubling as CNN, MSNBC, NY Times etc. not getting the basic story right in the first place - "traditional" sources do still exist even if they've mutated and even if "we" heard it about somewhere else - they're standard is way higher and they still have to be held accountable first - let's start by fixing the actual news agencies first because fixing the internet is going to take a while. Think about it - wtf does Don Lemon do? It's a good question whether he's on our news feeds or not. He very specifically pushed this anemic hoax (that's me doing me ) and blaming the internet while true is also the new blame Canada.

He faces six counts of disorderly conduct under a subsection of the law that prohibits false reports to police. Some states don’t categorize false police reports as disorderly conduct.
The charges are listed as class 4 felonies, which are among the least serious felonies in Illinois. But convictions can still carry potential prison time of up to three years.

Guilty of 5 of 6 counts of faking a hate crime
A Chicago jury reached guilty verdicts on five of six charges against Jussie Smollett Thursday.
The former “Empire” actor was accused of falsely reporting that he was the victim of a hate crime that took place in January 2019.
The decision came after nearly 10 hours of deliberation spread across two days from a panel of six men and six women.
These charges are class four felonies and could result in up to three years of prison time. Given Smollett’s lack of a criminal history, it is unclear if he will be sentenced to any time in prison.www.cnbc.com/2021/12/09/jussie-smollett-found-guilty-of-faking-hate-crime-lying-to-police.html

Yanno, I don't care what anybody says - I f'n love America - inventor of Rock and Roll and the chili dog btw - and I love that this piece of sh it gets this sentence in America and freaks out like a wackjob like you only really can in America. 30 months probation, over 100 grand restitution, 150 days in jail......kinda sounds suicidal tbh

This is embarrassing. The guy will be out in 5 months !I could understand them crying foul if he was given a couple of years or something, but this is some blue collar, slap on the wrist sentence, fitting the crime and waste of public money and resources. He doesn’t need no "free him" campaign. It's a similar sentences to the ones Lori Loughlin and her husband got in the college admissions scandal. No one got hurt in their crimes either, but an example still needed to be made of them. So I'm not really here for Taraji P Henson trying to weaponise cases like Emmett Till on behalf of her friend He's a grown man who has to suffer the consequences of his actions. Let him do his time, be out in a few months and maybe try to find a regular job if his showbiz career no longer had any takers. I feel bad for his sister, because....it's his sister. The family riding & dying for him is understandable, but co-workers, friends and colleagues should just let the man serve his time and keep quiet.

I mean I can see why some would want him to go free regardless of his guilt. Dude fucking got himself beat the fuck up for his hoax and his reputation is forever destroyed. Just watch the video of the judge ripping him a new asshole and saying his name is now synonymous with lying. Everything that judge said was true, so you can argue the man’s already been punished enough especially when you consider the future he faces regardless of if he serves jail time or not is a narcissist’s worst nightmare

Yeah I'm kinda weird - I would pretty much have to believe in his innocence to believe he should go free. His family is almost as embarrassing as he is - his brother and now his sis........though they are less entertaining......personally I'd toss in 30 days for spelling his first name like that.
