I came up with this as a little thought experiment a couple of weeks ago when I was hanging out with a friend who shares my love for Criterion and all other types of kino cinema. I posted it on the subreddit, too, but I didn't get too many replies, since I doubt most of the people there hold the Oscars in any sort of high regard. So I'll ask y'all, because I am lethally bored today, lol. Rules are simple, one category per film, do as many categories as you want. I abstained from a few of them myself, mainly the Short Film ones. And do feel free to berate my for my shitty hipster taste, by all means, haha. My picks are: * Best Picture: Ghost World * Best Director: Sergei Parajanov, The Color of Pomegranates * Best Actor: Richard E. Grant, Withnail and I * Best Actress: Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me * Best Supporting Actor: Song Kang-ho, Secret Sunshine * Best Supporting Actress: Ronee Blakley, Nashville * Best Original Screenplay: El Norte * Best Adapted Screenplay: Manila in the Claws of Light * Best Ensemble: Cries & Whispers * Best Editing: All That Jazz * Best Foreign Language Film: Nights of Cabiria * Best Animated Film: Akira (don't actually care for it too much, but I haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox, Fantastic Planet, or Watership Down, so...) * Best Documentary: Close-Up * Best Cinematography: Marketa Lazarova * Best Production Design: Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters * Best Costume Design: Ran * Best Makeup: Pan's Labyrinth * Best Visual Effects: House * Best Sound Mixing: RoboCop * Best Sound Editing: Eraserhead * Best Original Score: Paris, Texas * Best Original Song: "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" from Harold and Maude

Strictly Criterion releases? Yep. I actually stretched it a bit with mine, including Akira, which was only issued through Laserdisc, haha. By that logic, someone could include Pulp Fiction in theirs if they wanted to. Those choices for Actress, Original Screenplay, Makeup, & Editing are dynamite by the way! A couple of your others were high up on my list, especially Production Design & Visual Effects. Both of those are probably my #2's in their category. And your pick of Hoskins really intrigues me, as I've not yet seen Mona Lisa, but I've always wanted to since he was a total boss. Sure I'll be in for a treat there. Very nice list overall, I can't argue with a single one out of the ones I've seen. It's definitely less hipster than mine, which I'm sure some might assume is just an exercise in contrarianism. I swear I'm the only person on the internet that cares about Lino Brocka, unfortunately. And I'm aping your Ensemble category, it hadn't occurred to me to include it in my list. Cheers!

Mona Lisa is an utter jewel of a movie, and Hoskins might very well be the most robbed person in the history of the Academy Awards. Guy won every single award under the sun for that performance, and lost the Oscar at the final hurdle to Paul Newman. But the film itself is a marvelous neo-noir, with Cathy Tyson and Michael Caine giving magnificent performances (Caine is better here than his Oscar-winning turn that same year, in my opinion).

Oh I hear ya about that. People think Sally Hawkins got raw-dogged in 2008, but Hoskins won the BAFTA in addition to the Globe + big 3 critics awards! The poor fella must have been on the verge of a stroke after losing to a performance that has been so utterly forgotten. Thank you for the added details, it sounds super up my alley. I'd forgotten it was a Neil Jordan film for some reason, which is lame. Dude's pretty great, I think The Company of Wolves is hella underrated.

Although I'd have him in lead, TBH. Otherwise, he'd probably be my choice too for the category. I just got my best friend into the film a couple weeks ago, he loved it so much that he ended up watching it 3 times in like a 48 hour window. I worship Dead Man, it's one of the most quotable and easily rewatchable films ever made. The new Criterion release is gorgeous, I begged my friend to get it during November's sale and I gasped audibly with joy when he showed me the box. Your choice of Barrault really intrigues me, I haven't seen the film yet but it was literally the first thing I ever added to my queue on Filmstruck and I've been dying to see it for ages. I'm strongly considering buying it, along with a couple other things, with some Christmas money. I'm looking at that, the Marseilles trilogy, the Three Colors trilogy, the new Criterion of 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days, and a couple of Kino's Zvyagintsev releases. I'll have to figure out which to prioritize over the others, lol. Cheers!

I don't put much thought into categorizing things like that as a lot of people on here do, so I'm flexible. Glad to see some more love for Dead Man on here! Such a brilliant, dense, evocative film. Children of Paradise is top tier, probably my favorite French movie ever made (beats out Contempt by just a bit, I think).
