The original animated adaptation being a childhood favorite of mine (despite how harrowing it has been and it certainly haunted me back then/still does...), I was looking forward to this new BBC/Netflix version. But boy, what an ugly looking thing this is. After about 10 minutes, I gave up. The reviews overall aren't too bad. But come on. What a waste, if they couldn't even animate it properly (with a reported budget of over $25 million.)
This reviewer said it best:
But apparently at least I was spared what is said to be the most horrifying part:
The original

I saw the trailer a while back and there is something really off about it. Looks like it's from 2002 or something. Not surprised it's going to be watered (heh) down.

I don't care for the original movie; it's a cliff-notes version of a book I spent my childhood obsessing over. I really don't think that anyone can do justice to the story without a long-form, multi-part format.
That said, I just watched the trailer for this. I think Cheesecake is generous in saying that it looks like it's from 2002. The first Uncharted game looked better than this. I can't take the violence seriously when Kehaar's flying looks like something off of a Steam edition flight simulator. Martin Rosen had the right idea with his movie visually, he only failed in cutting an epic journey into a 90 minute "best of" album.

yeah I heard about this. Looks gross I'll stick with the Rosen, now and probably forever.
