Pryce in The Wife
I guess it's debatable if Tommy Lee Jones is lead or supporting in Coal Miner's Daughter and Blue Sky, but he was way better than the two that won Oscars in both of them.

Sam Neill in Evil Angels ( A Cry in the Dark) and Possession and My Brilliant Career. He's the king of this, really. Jeremy Irons in The French Lieutenant's WomanNot really a lead, but Tom Skerritt in The Turning Point deserves recognition. I'll update as I think of more!

Just because I watched it recently, Woody gives a helluva performance against Moore in Game Change.

William Shimell in Certified Copy is my go-to for this question, I think his performance is one of the most underrated I've ever seen. Binoche is as luminous and singular as ever in the film, and her Cannes trophy was well-deserved, but Shimell left a bigger impression on me, and considering the fact that he had never acted on-screen before, that is one hell of a feat!

Eddie Marsan in Happy Go Lucky, Dennis Quaid in Far From Heaven. They're low key supporting though.

Richard Jenkins in Olive Kitteridge Matthew Broderick in Election Harvey Keitel in The Piano James Caan in Cinderella Liberty Joe Mantegna in House of Games
some of these might be less women-centric and more "the female lead got much more acclaim"
