One of the most insanely overrated movies in the old IMDB days........basically a very middle brow, prosaic piece of TV-ism, no different from an episode say of Criminal Minds although the production qualities and acting are of a higher caliber. The kind of film people use generic adjectives like "powerful" and "gut wrenching" to describe.
I prefer to use ones like non-cinematic and banal.

Thought it was okay. I've cooled on it over the years though. 7/10

Just been thinking a lot about how I want to rewatch it soon. Jake Gyllenhaal is great. Editing is underrated.

Way too damn long. Melissa Leo is MVP. The two leads are good, but not impressive.

Still my favourite movie of his. Love that thing. Looks amazing, feels doom laden, great cast. Subtle as a sledgehammer, but less stupid than most of his other films seem to end up.

A real disappointment for me. Good cast, great technical mastery, especially Deakins' cinematography, actually totally my kind of thing, genre movie that somehow also deals with the conditio humana, so to speak.
But the movie just unfolds and leads to nowhere. Prosaic, as pacinoyes described it.
And I saw through the whole thing as soon as Melissa Leo showed up, in that stupid, ugly old-age make-up. A good actress, but they should have cast someone else for that part, someone more unknown.

It starts out strong enough and Deakin’s broody, impeccably textured photography lends the film a lot of portent and atmosphere, but the script really loses its footing in the last third. I think when the snakes made an appearance I pretty much tapped out of caring what happened next. And the casting of Melissa Leo is just a whopping miscalculation...doesn’t help that her performance itself feels something out of a B grade potboiler.
Oh and Jake’s Visine-starved blinking...WTF was that??

This movie is fantastic. From beginning to end, the film is riveting with a powerfully dark, yet hopeful atmosphere.

It's a very very solid thriller with real suspense and gripping from beginning to end. And the ending - subtle yet impacting. I still remember starkly Loki's desperate drive to the hospital and the linger of the faint whistles in the end.

I still maintain to this day that Viola Davis and Maria Bello should've swapped characters.

Haven’t seen this for awhile so I should probably renew my thoughts but from what I remember, I thought it was pretty great. Very stressful atmosphere that made me easy for me to identify with the characters, terrific acting, and the cinematography is top-notch as expected from Roger Deakins.

It's fantastic. Great performances, intriguing mystery, phenomenal cinematography by the Deak. Maaaybe my favorite Villeneuve still? Not sure, this or Blade Runner 2049.
