So I think it’s more or less down to seven contenders (unless they resurrect something like First Man or Beale St the way they did for Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and others) but I think the top five will come from...
Roma A Star is Born The Favourite Green Book Blackkklansman Black Panther Vice
The DGA is generally more middlebrow than the Oscars so I’m getting a bit nervous for The Favourite. I’m not to worried at the Oscars but I could see it missing out here in favor of something like Greenbook or Vice. I wasn’t originally gonna put Black Panther in there but th SAG nod was big and they did nominate Nolan for TDK. I think I’ll stick with the first five for now though.

Roma A Star Is Born BlacKkKlansman Vice Black Panther
have a sneaking suspicion Black Panther will take Lanthimos' spot here.

Roma A Star Is Born Green Book Blackkklansman Black Panther
The DGA has never given spike a nod. Kinda sad especially when Globes has given him two for director.

Alfonso Cuaron Spike Lee Adam McKay Bradley Cooper Peter Farrelly This. I think Coogler, Lanthimos, Chazelle, Singer, Marshall, and Jenkins as the alternatives.

Cuaron, McKay, Cooper, Lee, Coogler. Why no Farrelly? He's scored Best Director nominations at the Globes, Critics Choice, and Satellite awards. He came in 2nd place at the San Diego Film critics awards. Add to the fact, that Farrelly departs from his usual juvenile comedies, and does a serious film, directed smoothly and efficiently.

What is the issue? The film won the Toronto Film Festival and National Board of Review Best Picture award. The film is a crowd-pleaser films about friendship and racism. The only thing going against it is the Rotten Tomatoes score being at 82% rather in the 85% to 100% range, which is what most best picture nominees are in. But then again, you do have the Revernant, Les Miserables, and The Wolf of Wall Street being under that. It should be noted that the Broadcast Film Critics have the film's scored listed as 94/100, making it the highest rated film among their best picture nominees. You honestly think Green Book is going to miss out on a PGA and WGA nomination?

It is generally stronger than the other crowdpleasers it's been compared to ( The Help, Hidden Figures), but I want to hear more about the reactions at guild screenings.

I just find it odd, anybody would NOT pick a film which scored Best Director nominations at the Satellite, Globes, and Critics Choice awards. If I were rank my predictions: Cuaron, Cooper, and Lee are locks for that DGA nominations. Based on the Best Picture and Best Director attention they are receiving. Singer, Chu, and Coogler's films did score a SAG Ensemble nomination, but they have yet to score any Best Director attention. The next two buzzing directors are Farrelly and McKay.

I’m predicting Farrelly but the Globes, BFCA and Sattelites have no affiliation with any actual person in the industry. Be it the guilds or Academy.

Bradley Cooper Alfonso Cuaron Peter Farrelly Spike Lee Yorogs Lanthimos
with Adam McKay and Ryan Coogler looking outside.
I'm beginning to think Yorgos Lanthimos is starting to become the Martin McDonagh of this year's awards season.

I would be surprised to see Lanthimos make DGA. It's not their type of film, and I was wary of predicting him even when The Favourite seemed stronger (so basically before the SAG announcement).
