You know what, although I'm still pretty confident in predicting Cooper, I think your scenario is quite possible

Imagine a scenario where Malek wins Best Actor and Cooper wins Best Director (beating Lee and Cuaron). A nightmare.

You know, I'm genuinely starting to think that this is very possible, and I almost made a post about it myself. At this point, I think Cooper is only remaining the frontrunner in Lead Actor because he still looks the best on-paper. But with Hawke absolutely dominating the critics awards so far, none of the big contenders for the industry awards have picked up any steam, leaving it pretty up-in-the-air. At this point, we have no idea who the industry awards are gonna favor. And honestly, with Bohemian Rhapsody over-performing with HFPA and SAG, it's starting to feel like a lot of momentum is shifting towards Malek. And Malek does have a lot on his side: he's already a highly-acclaimed television actor and relatively popular in the industry, he played a British icon of the 20th century in a biopic written by Anthony McCarten (which is apparently huge in this category for some reason), and he's in the sweet spot of that up-and-comer status that the Academy has liked recognizing in recent years. Not to mention, Malek carries his film in a way that Cooper does not; people leave A Star is Born thinking about way more than just Cooper's performance, but people have left Bohemian Rhapsody thinking about little but Malek's. I'm still predicting Cooper until the industry awards hit, mostly because of his status and his heavy campaigning, but I absolutely think he's vulnerable now. I could totally foresee a situation at the Globes in which Cooper wins Director and Malek wins Actor, and a boost like that might be all that Malek needs to emerge as the new frontrunner. So, yeah, I 100% think this is possible.

I'd made my peace with Cooper as a Best Actor winner for that performance, but imagining him winning Best Director for that? Jesus wept. It's very much possible. Malek is the only possible prize for Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie loved by the general audiences and the industry alike. It's easy for Oscar voters to give Best Actor to Malek and the movie they loved so much, and give the very conveniently coveted Best Director award to Hollywood's current darling. It's a win-win situation for Malek (who'll never have another chance), Cooper (who's craving that Directing Oscar) AND the industry (that can hit two birds with one stone).
Spike Lee is our last hope.

Well, both are biopics but Eddie's character had to overcome a disability.

Well, both are biopics but Eddie's character had to overcome a disability. But Academy also loves to win biopic based on real-life singers! remember Ray, La Vie en Rose, Walk the Line, Coal Miner's Daughter and Funny Girl... true easier for actresses. Fox did his own singing. I'm not saying impossible but if movie gets nod then he will probably win. Funny, a month ago or so the majority said he wouldnt score a nod and now we are saying he could win.

IDK, Malek is creeping up the rankings for me. Best case scenario is Cooper wins Best Actor, CuarĂ³n wins Best Director, and Spike Lee wins Best Adapted Screenplay (unless Beale Street wins).

I don't see how the two are comparable.
Redmayne had to play both a real-life figure and somebody with motor control problems, and top of that, his film was getting screenplay buzz as well.
Honestly I think Mortensen, Bale, and Cooper played more challenging roles. The Globes are likely to go for A Star is Born for Best Actor in a Drama, Best Actress in a Drama, Best Drama, and Best Original Song.
Nothing against Malek and his performance. He was great and basically carried the film.
