Brokeback Mountain (2005) Days of Wine and Roses (1962) Hud (1963) Jurassic Park (1993) The Shining (1980) Extremely surprised Rebecca wasn't on there already, even though I do find it overrated and nowhere close to Hitchcock's best works. Need to see Eve's Bayou and Pickup on South Street.

Who would've ever guess that movies like The Dark Knight and Shrek can earn a place with the National Film Registry?

Who would've ever guess that movies like The Dark Knight and Shrek can earn a place with the National Film Registry? They add 25 titles a year, all of them American. That is an awful lot of movies. Friday is coming next year, and then Behind the Green Door.

Swish! Cooley High deserves it - great duo, great humor, great heart. Michael Schultz is an underrated director, despite some serious clunkers. And how awesome - he directed Pacino in his Tony winning Broadway debut.
Elm Street, Baby Jane, Long Goodbye, Strangers on a Train, Sounder - clearly all deserve their place here. Interesting late add for Return of the Jedi, the funkiest Star Wars (and so, my fav) - A New Hope was in the Registry's very first batch over thirty years ago and Empire Strikes Back over a decade ago, so they've called it the runt but it's still the most fun of the originals.

I've been nominating 50 films every year since 2017 and I'll admit that I'm much happier with this year's class than over some of the prior ones. I'm especially happy to see A Nightmare on Elm Street, LotR: Fellowship of the Ring, Strangers on a Train, Stop Making Sense, Return of the Jedi, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and Flowers and Trees make it in. Wall-E is great but a surprising pick considering Finding Nemo is not in. I'll also echo everyone's joy over Cooley High getting in as well. And like every year, a lot of these I hadn't heard of and I'll have to check out going forward. Here's my list of candidates that I choose from to vote every year - boxd.it/b0dPmThere's still some glaring oversights in my opinion that I hope gets resolved sooner. No Don Bluth animated films, No Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes, only one 3 Stooges entry, a lot of significant animated shorts from the 20s-60s still missing (specifically, Red Hot Riding Hood or The Cat Concerto), a lot of classic horror missing, and no Angels with Dirty Faces, Key Largo, or The Great Escape.

That's a great list! thx for posting the link. So many essential movies. The Circus missing hurts, it's my fav Chaplin - he's got six in the registry, but Buster Keaton has seven! Tie 'em up. I'd like to see Dead End join, there's a solid case for it and then Wyler would tie Ford's not-totally-deserved entry record (at 11). Gotta get Mad Mad Mad Mad World in there, definitely The Defiant Ones...... and I can't believe it, could it be? are there no De Palma movies in the whole thing??! Carrie is a no-brainer add and several others. Some other great American pics that the registry oughta flirt with: The Last Detail, The Verdict, The Misfits, Splendor in the Grass, Shampoo, Matewan, Other Side of the Wind, Arzner's The Wild Party (Paramount's first talkie, first use of a boom mic etc)…..

Documentaries make up almost half of this year's group of inductees and only 3/25 entries predate 1959 Very few of my personal nominees made it in (only 2 of my nominees from this year, 3 from my overall wishlist), which is a bit disappointing), but there were also some great picks that I hadn't included, like the incredible Titicut Follies or Super Fly. The full list below: Mardi Gras Carnival (1898)Cab Calloway Home Movies (1948-1951)Cyrano de Bergerac (1950)Charade (1963)*Scorpio Rising (1963)Behind Every Good Man (1967)Titicut Follies (1967)Mingus (1968)Manzanar (1971)Betty Tells Her Story (1972)Super Fly (1972)Attica (1974)Carrie (1976)*Union Maids (1976)Word is Out: Stories of Our Lives (1977)Bush Mama (1979)The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982)Itam Hakim, Hopiit (1984)Hairspray (1988)The Little Mermaid (1989)Tongues Untied (1989)When Harry Met Sally (1989)*House Party (1990)Iron Man (2008)Pariah (2011)* = my personal nominations

Nice for House Party. Surprised but it makes sense. This scene sums up the movie perfectly. Just a fun movie that represents the 90s vibe pretty well. Oh and the song is a 90s banger.

Not as many major films as last year. Some good picks tho.... the haunting Bush Mama.... the spry Charade (significant in a unique way: is it the biggest copyright screwup ever for a film?) .....obviously Carrie (De Palma's first in the registry! they can't justify leaving off his others like Scarface for this long btw).
Quibbles:
I'm glad to see Ballad of Gregorio Cortez but it seems they skipped over Robert Young's earlier Alambrista! I'd include his mini-movie J.T. (1969) too. What a guy... still alive at 98y/o, he was the writer-producer of Nothing But a Man (on the Registry since '93, GOAT-tier movie).
Super Fly is Parks Jr's worst film and like The Mack you understand the negative retrospect of their social effect and don't really understand why they're still so favored (by QT, etc) over many better, cleverer blaxploitation pics. I remember one of the Peebles, in a doc, unpacked all the harm of Super Fly.... sure it's "significant" .....but I wouldn't vote it over The Story of a Three-Day Pass (which is practically built for the Registry).
If you're gonna have House Party, gimme Friday (1995) too!

What is the copyright screwup with Charade? I'm familiar with the copyright issues of Night of the Living Dead, but not this one. Edit: nvm I looked it up. Government, folks.

2023 Selections for the National Film Registry announced... 12 Years a Slave (2013)20 Feet from Stardom (2013)Alambrista! (1977)Apollo 13 (1995)Bamboozled (2000)Bohulano Family Film Collection (1950s-1970s)Cruisin' J-Town (1975)Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)Dinner at Eight (1933)Edge of the City (1957)Fame (1980)Helen Keller in Her Story (1954)Home Alone (1990)Lady and the Tramp (1955)The Lighted Field (1987)Love & Basketball (2000)Matewan (1987)Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision (1994)A Movie Trip Through Filmland (1921)The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)Passing Through (1977)Queen of Diamonds (1991)Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)The Wedding Banquet (1993)We're Alive (1974)My thoughts... I like this class a lot more than last year's. I had actually forgotten to vote this year after being disappointed in last year's choices, but I'm glad to see 5 from my candidate list make it in despite that. Most of these films I've never heard of before (which is a good thing) while others are films I've either seen and respect (Wedding Banquet, Dinner at Eight), or heard of but never saw (Matewan, Bamboozled, etc). There's still some issues I have - this year there's only one film from the 1920s, one from the 1930s, and none from the 1940s, which is actually far better than last year's output, but still not good enough. I read somewhere that more than 90% of films made before 1930 are lost forever, and with how things are going lately (physical media disappearing, streaming services censoring or removing films at their whim, studio execs like Zaslav just "making things disappear" completely) I think its even more crucial to preserve these older films - and there's a ton that stand out as no-brainers yet are still on the outside looking in. Another minor issue is with their animation picks - while both Lady & the Tramp and Nightmare Before Christmas were on my lists, it would be nice to see some non-Disney features or shorts selected. Currently, the registry is lacking anything from Don Bluth, any Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Droopy Dog, or Felix the Cat cartoons, and that's not even going into some truly iconic Fleischer Bros. shorts (like Superman: The Mad Scientist) or WB/Tex Avery shorts (Red Hot Riding Hood, Rabbit of Seville). Here's my grand Candidate list for the National Film Registry again - boxd.it/b0dPmMy main criteria is how ingrained something from a film (whether it be a shot, a quote, music, a concept, etc.) is into pop culture, with a film's innovation or critical acclaim not far behind.)

Great selection this year! Can’t go wrong with Home Alone, Terminator 2, and Apollo 13 plus it’s awesome the critical revaluation Bamboozled is having.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) When you look at this year's list and see this pick it seems increibly hip and subversive - like it oesn't fit the well meaning "heaviness" of a lot of the recent films
