If there's a 10th, I say it'll be First Reformed, but I'm predicting it to pull a Foxcatcher and get in for Director, Actor, & Screenplay but narrowly miss out for Picture. Vice just seems too sour and antithetical to the prevailing mood of the year, which is an embrace of populism and more accessible fare in response to the overwhelming bleakness that has seeped into nearly every facet of public life. The subject matter is already a giant demerit against its prospects of catching on with voters, I feel. The film's surprising overperformance at the Globes is giving me strong Charlie Wilson's War vibes, somehow, and I don't see it hitting very well at BAFTA at all. Annapurna's recent troubles with money, coupled with all of what I've just said, is leading me to believe Vice will be this year's biggest surprise omission.
