They can't all be Marcello Mastroianni or Liv Ullmann, but who are some in particular who you're surprised were never nominated?
My top two choices are Romy Schneider and Jean-Louis Trintignant. It's shameful that their careers went unrecognized by the Academy.

Bruno Ganz. Mads Mikkelsen also deserves one by now.

Who's the worlds most talented actor? Well, on this board you know the names but hardly ever mentioned is Sergio Castellitto who wastes his time in TV work and stuff that is beneath him but is something of a master.
He should have been nodded for The Star Maker - the dark underside of Cinema Paradiso and one of the most daring unsympathetic characterizations I've ever seen.

Thanks for all of your answers!
The thread wasn't meant so much as a way to lament foreign-language actors not being nominated, but rather to discuss when these actors had genuine shots at nominations (i.e. the passion was there for their films in other categories.)
Schneider, Trintignant, and Moreau fit the bill. Maybe Gong, though the Academy seems to be strangely averse to leading Asian actors. Who are some others who fit this mold?

Vittorio Gassman. He got international praise and Cannes best actor recognition for Profumo di donna (scent of a woman), but he didn't get an Oscar nomination. I personally would have given him other nods too, for Il sorpasso for instance.

I don't know why Ziyi Zhang missed for Memoirs of a Geisha.

I don't know why Ziyi Zhang missed for Memoirs of a Geisha.Yep. And even moreso Li Gong. Also agree, when talking about what Tyler called his actual idea for the thread, with Noiret for Cinema Paradiso and Trintignant. All this love for Amour and they didn't nominate him? Really?

I personally would have given him other nods too, for Il sorpasso for instance. Gassman is an excellent choice! He rose to some prominence in America too as the husband of Shelley Winters. He would have been "known" in the right circles.
