Yes. But in hindsight, Stone was pretty good as well. I need to reevaluate her performance after a rewatch.

I liked Stone and thought she was a perfect fit for La La Land. She's one of the better recent winners (not saying much, but there you go), and her speech was lovely. Not a lot of her peers could pull that stylised nature of the film off as well as she did. However, Huppert runs circles around her in Elle. The character is much more interesting and layered, her thoughts and emotions aren't telegraphed so obviously, and she sinks into the role more fluidly. Despite some rather outrageous twists and turns it's still a more natural and nuanced performance than Stone's, for me. It's the kind of performance where you discover new surprises each time you watch it, little pangs of humour and fleeting microexpressions that tell you much more than any amount of dialogue could. A master at work. Along with it being a more 'impressive' performance, I simply found her more entertaining to watch as well. A deliciously singular, modern performance that makes no concessions for likability or charisma. The indifference is fascinating and not something we see often at all in female characters. Huppert would definitely make the upper reaches of my top 5 (along with the likes of Sandra Huller, Sonia Braga, Kate Lyn Sheil, Fatimah Al Banawi). Stone would sit somewhere in my top 20.

Of course not. Negga and Portman were far better as well.

God, no. However, Stone was still impressive. Quite an emotional range displayed in La La Land.

Absolutely not! Huppert is miles better. Stone is definitely among the worst Best Access winners of all time.

This win is not gonna age well, but among the recent ''flavor of the month babe'' wins, this one doesn't look too bad.

Portman was better than both of them.
But I was glad Stone won over Huppert.
