Well 3 legendary filmmakers have huge, ambitious movies that cross-connect with their defined artistic visions : Scorsese, Tarantino, Polanski.
That's pretty much it, but I will say I recently saw a film called Ian McKellen: Playing The Part - a fascinating piece of actor history/context/propaganda (if you care about acting at all, see it) that argues him as the overall UK actor of his era (take that Hopkins and the rest!) and screams for another definitive role to follow it up - opposite Helen Mirren........that one could sort of seal the deal.
