Early in his career - through at least the mid 70s - he was in many ways responsible for incorporating a lot of thematic ideas and also camera movements/trickery (for lack of a better term) that his peer directors in genre films would copy or expand upon.
In those early films you would always find several moments where you would say something like "I've never seen this idea expressed in this way"
