To me it's Hawke without much hesitation, even if Ruffalo has turned in a few impressive performances and has a more varied body of work.
I think the latter is successful when he's not given a lot of meat to chew on and is simply asked out to fill out the contours of an everyman. He can be downright embarrassing when he goes big, e.g, Spotlight. Hawke has starred in fewer prestige pics but is much more consistent overall, and generally operates from a truer place of living out the character instead of just performing it.

I think Ruffalo is a generally overrated actor. He's a decent character actor but not much more. Hawke is capable of leading a film.

Definitely Hawke. Ruffalo can be good (Zodiac, Foxcatcher), but I have yet to see Hawke give a performance as truly dire as Ruffalo's in Spotlight. Honestly, ever since his first Oscar nomination, I've found Ruffalo to be rather intolerable in most things he's in. Hawke might pop up in movies I don't like, but he usually is reliably good.

I wouldn't be a big fan of either, though I can appreciate both. I voted Ruffalo, as he had no votes, and I don't think he deserves to be getting whitewashed by the likes of Ethan Hawke.

I will never ever EVER understand or respect the hatred Ruffalo gets for his SPOTLIGHT performance. His character was SUPPOSED to be OTT and I thought he sold all the "big" emotional scenes quite well. Easily one of the cast's Top 3 standouts for me (along with Schreiber and Tucci), and I fucking LOVE that ensemble.
