Patience is the noblest of virtues... But, as you eagerly await the release of this masterpiece (yeah, I said it) at a cinema near you, enjoy watching these films, per The Favourite's IMDb Trivia Page: Amadeus (1984) The Cremator (1969) Cries & Whispers (1972) The Draughtsman's Contract (1982) Possession (1981) The newest TV spot: https://www.instagram.com/p/BqNr5xbFLYQ

I'm dying to watch it. Do you think there's a bit of Barry Lyndon in the mix as well?

I'm dying to watch it. Do you think there's a bit of Barry Lyndon in the mix as well? Definitely - Lanthimos uses candlelight to stunning effects in key scenes. I'd also look to Marie Antoinette (Judy Davis' deadpan would have been perfect in Lanthimos' world) and Dangerous Liaisons (Weisz's work is very shades of Glenn Close's Merteuil).

Oh honeys, this is everyone's favourite I am so looking forward to this... Oh honey, it's as if Lanthimos pondered to himself, "What does Tyler want in a movie?" and then made it just for me.

GREENAWAY I do have to say I hope it's more the first four and less Possession

I have to say I have a hard time sort of putting this film into context with those films - maybe it will make more sense after I see it but I think this is the first of his films he didn't write - so I'm a little off-balance with how it'll play on me. I love The Cremator although the others seem far less funny than what I get from the trailer and to what Lanthimos always does really. Though I suppose that's the part of the weird tone of Possession too (really both of those are essentially horror films at their core to me). Very excited to see it - I am quite a fan of two of his films Dogtooth and Killing of a Sacred Deer in particular which are films that really burst our BS talk about films nowadays and our herd mentality as movie fans. Those two films are great to just talk about and think about. My favorites of this year (First Reformed, Buster Scruggs) are 8's - so it has not been a particularly good year at the movies for me (I mean I post every other day about the death of the screenplay in 2018 ) so for me...........stakes are high.

pacinoyes - I sought out both The Cremator and The Draughtsman's Contract after seeing this list (the others I had of course seen already) - I really liked The Cremator (it's intensely disturbing, but there's poetry in its perversity), and can see its DNA all over Lanthimos' work - Greek and American. I enjoyed the Greenaway considerably less, but I loved the wigs (!!!) and I thought it was funny - I can definitely see it as a companion piece to The Favourite. As I mentioned above and elsewhere, Barry Lyndon, Dangerous Liaisons, and Marie Antoinette all seemed to be reference points, as well. Mattsby - How about you? Thoughts on these films?

Extremely excited for The Favourite. I think I’ll love it, but we shall see.
Possession is among my fav horrors with an all timer Adjani performance. The Cremator is ingenious and mesmeric and ghastly, the writing, the wall-to-wall music, the editing which often tricks us into the next scene, it’s all very closely keeping with the lead who is coaxing us along, and the characters around him, with his ridiculously horrifying mantra. Love it. I love Amadeus too. Cries & Whispers on the other hand is maybe my least favorite Bergman bc it’s so excruciatingly unpleasant to watch, I can’t think of another movie I’d rather not rewatch as much tbh.
Lanthimos is certainly among the best filmmakers, the most interesting, to emerge in the last ten years or so. He's uniquely gifted as a formal, tonal, visual stylist - and thematically always pushing and never forgetting to have a sense of humor either. Idk if that Iran-Contra series is still happening but even something like that: you just can't picture what it'd look like thru his eyes.

Cries and Whispers being among those films just makes everything even more interesting. This is probably my most anticipated film right now. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until February to see it (that's when it gets released where I live).

Have any of you read 'The Queen's Favourites' by Jean Plaidy (also known as Victoria Holt)? First published in 1966, its synopsis is virtually the same as Lanthimos' film... Update: So, I finally finished reading this book (I’m not a very fast reader!). Ever since I watched the film, I’ve been trying to find a novel that would fully submerse me in the story of this historical triangle, and this book absolutely does the trick. I thought it was brilliant. It was re-published as ‘Courting Her Highness’ some time ago - that would be the title to search for now. I highly recommend fans of the film do so! stephen Tommen_Saperstein
