I believe he'll hit every precursor but he'll miss the nomination at the end to some late release like Clint or some passion vote/critics favorite (Hawke, Dafoe).

I'll riot if he doesn't get nominated! He was way better than Bradley

Oh honey, his profile is too low. You didn't think the Oscars were about acting, did you? Besides Gaga is one music performance and will be enough...

I'd say he's on the outside looking in. Too much blowback from Singer's involvement in the film and controversy about the film's treatment of Mercury itself might be too much to overcome. I'd say he hits some necessary industry precursors but trips at the final hurdle to a passion pick.

Honestly not even gonna vote as it feels incredibly 50/50 at this point. As of right now I'd say there's a fifth spot wide open following Cooper, Bale, Mortensen, and Gosling (and obviously this could change too, as Gosling is no longer a guarantee, and Bale could underwhelm). The across-the-board raves for Malek and the film's popularity with general audiences seem to suggest he's currently the favorite to take that spot. As others have said, he seems bound to hit most precursors; I'd be shocked to not see him be recognized by the Globes, SAG, and BAFTA. That being said, there are so many other performances vying for that spot ... Redford, Jackman, Hawke, Dafoe, Eastwood, Reilly maybe, probably others I'm forgetting ... that all could be pushed-in with the right surge and a lot of passion voting. So, it's really a true toss-up, as far as I'm concerned.

The movie was not well received enough for him to get a best Actor nom. He'll probably get in at the Globes.

This is kind of off-topic, but just to co-sign on what you said: I see many people listing Bale as a Cooper/Mortensen-level surefire thing, but I can't get on board with that at all. At least not at this point, when his film hasn't even screened and his studio is a damn mess. I have him as #4 or so and he can certainly go higher once we hear word on Vice, but a lot of predictors are counting him as safe and taking him for granted and I really don't see why. I learned my lesson last year after months of keeping Winslet in the top 3 based on her role and her supposedly great buzz. As far as I'm concerned, the only ones that I can predict with a solid level of confidence right now are Cooper and Mortensen; that leaves three spots that can be filled up many different ways. Were Best Actor as strong as Actress this year, I'd have Bale on the outside looking in.

Out. The film received generally average reviews and is highly unlikely to receive any major nominations. A Globe win would have obviously helped, but the film is being entered for Drama and he won't get in over more well-known actors, some in more popular films.

I think he could be in. The film is not a critical flop. It is truly mixed. Even in the negative reviews, they still praise him. The audience reaction is extremely positive, currently #205 on imdb's top 250 (not that should be used as too much of a metric especially for a new release but it does show love for it), and is doing well at the box office. His two biggest hurdles are the Singer involvement and that the film probably won't receive any other major nominations. For the latter his competition in Redford and Dafoe may have the same problem, for the former apparently Malek was involved with Singer being fired, so he can probably avoid "praising" him along the campaign trail, though it still will be a tricky issue.

I'll riot if he doesn't get nominated! He was way better than Bradley There would be no ASIB 2018 without Bradley Cooper. He did a lot more in the film than just a hired actor. He did his own singing, while Malek lip sync.

If the movie was a short-film recreating the Live Aid, he'd be in. But unfortunately not only it's a full-lenght feature, but it's that full-lenght feature. Reviews are very middling and that would be Malek's first nod. When was the last time a newcomer had his Academy-debut for a movie that's not actually good and directed by pedo bear with a sex scandal in the making?
