Which introspective performance were you more impressed by. Both are socially awkward loners, both affected by tragedy. I think Gene is more natural, Affleck upon reflection, while brilliant, seems a little mannered with his reactions especially in the hospital scene and the way he engages in conversation with people.

Hackman is all-time stuff.
I never got the fuss on Affleck, he was quite good, but not that great. I don't even think I nominate him.

I wouldn't even rate Manchester by the Sea in Casey Affleck's top five, much less favorably against The Hack Man.

Thought this was a raygittes poll. So did I... Really don't see why these are worth comparing It just seems so random to me.

I like that you've given your explanation for comparing these two. Anyway, Casey is great but Hackman is an all timer in The Conversation.

Too hard for me to compare but Affleck is a work of genuine acting greatness too and to me a sort of landmark in American film acting. It is Brandoesque without for one second trying to evoke Brando. Bardem in Biutiful, DDL in Phantom Thread, it's on that level of best of decade stuff and only really rivaled by Phoenix and PSH in The Master for Americans in recent years.

Affleck was fine, but his run through that season was baffling. He was a 5th or 4th slot nominee type of performance that critics turned into some sort of silly season sweeper. Committed daylight robbery against Denzel's titanic performance in Fences.
Hackman gave arguably his finest performance, in a much more complex role than Affleck's. No contest to Hackman.
