Bottom line, yes and no.
Cake is completely cliche and forgettable, and I can totally see why no studio wanted to buy it, but Aniston herself is excellent. Luminous work from an actress who clearly deserves better than she gets. That's why I was mostly rooting for her back then; an Oscar nomination would certainly improve her chances of actually getting offered decent stuff and would put her in more casting directors' radars.
The thing is, it was a really strong lineup. The only nominee I'd rank below her is Felicity Jones, and I can't even be upset about her nod because not only was she pretty good in The Theory of Everything, she capitalized on her awards glory quite nicely. And more importantly, as much as I like her, Aniston was replaced by a much better alternative: Cotillard's nomination is one of the greatest Oscar surprises of the past few years, not only because it came completely out of nowhere (at the time I thought that if anyone was gonna sneak in, it was gonna be Adams, and that'd be a horrible pick), but also because Cotillard's is a magnificent, win-worthy performance that ranks as one of the finest of the decade.
So yeah, I would've liked to see Aniston nominated, but it allowed Cotillard to finally land her second nod, so I can't complain.

She gave a better performance than three of the five actual nominees and barely misses my own lineup. As Zeb says, the film is formulaic and basic as all hell, but Aniston is terrific in it.

Yeah, all things considered, she would have been a fine nominee. I wish Cotillard had taken Pike's or Witherspoon's spot tbh.

Not at all, it was just such the obvious move, I'd prefer getting in for Along Came Polly or The Break-up before this.

She was fine in Cake, but the movie overall is so, so bad. I don't think she had anything to do in that BA bunch, as fine as she was, she couldn't hold a candle next to Moore, Pike, Cotillard and Witherspoon. She was Oscar-worthy in The Good Girl, but not in this.
Also, call me cynical but I don't really buy this whole "Aniston isn't offered good parts in dramas" thing. Every year she's religiously ranked among the ten best-paid actresses in Hollywood, and she can't use her money to fund better movies? Witherspoon and Chastain have less clout (and, in Chastain's case, less experience and fame) and are already making a change. I mean, Witherspoon managed to become a tour-de-force producer in a matter of a few years.
I think Aniston realized one day that, despite being super famous and rich, she didn't have any perspective to get an Oscar nod, and then decided to do the work other ladies took years to build in a window of a few months.
