Carell is the one thing that keeps Foxcatcher from being a masterpiece. His Wheezy Joe routine and fake-ass nose really distract from what is otherwise an austere, unsettling experience.
And yet, Hoffman's even worse, because his mincing, overly fey mannerisms come off as incredibly phony and barely skin-deep, which is a shock coming from such a remarkably talented actor as he was. Capote is a bad movie even aside from him, but he is the major offender and he doesn't have the benefit of a Channing Tatum to offset his antics.
So yeah, I'd take Carell between the two but neither one should've been anywhere near a nomination.

Carell was only about the third best performance in his film. Hoffman was very good indeed, although he was better many, many times. He is still the easy winner of this choice.

Not in love with either, but I suppose PSH found the right note more consistently.

I respect Carell's efforts in Foxcatcher but he doesn't stand next to PSH's brilliant and convincing performance as Truman Capote. I will say though that if there's something to be said about Carell's work, it's that his job becoming the icy and distant and hard-to-pin-down John DuPont was more challenging than Hoffman's transformation into Capote (after reading about him online and watching the Netflix Foxcatcher Farm documentary I still feel like I know virtually nothing about DuPont). I imagine researching the role must have been a bitch. On the other hand, the flamboyant Capote feels like a role tailor-made for Hoffman. It played right into his strengths and instincts, some might say too much so. But I wouldn't.

I'd rather take an axe to the head than watch either of them again. Hoffman

Love both performances but I'll go with Hoffman
