I guess he is probably my favourite of that batch of young film makers, with only a handful or less features to their names.
Mud is my choice, as I think it has a clear edge on the others, which I then find to be fairly close in quality.

Yeah, I agree it's Mud with Take Shelter really close, but they are at least good even Midnight Special which seems to be disliked more than the others. He and David Lowery have this incredibly interesting niche and it honestly feels like they have been trading punches even though Nichols has been around slightly longer
If I were to rank/rate these. 1. Mud 9/10 2. Take Shelter 9/10 3. Loving 8/10 4. Shotgun Stories 7/10 5. Midnight Special 7/10

I agree, he's one of the best young filmmakers around.
I would rank his films as:
1. Take Shelter 2. Midnight Special 3. Shotgun Stories 4. Mud 5. Loving
All good-to-great.

Take Shelter and nothing really comes close, though Mud is good.

missing Mud and Midnight Special (don't care to see the latter) but between the other three it's definitely Take Shelter. Didn't get much out of Loving and even less out of Shotgun Stories.

Loving by a hair over Take Shelter, but I love 'em all except for Midnight Special[/o], which I consider a misfire.
