For example: say Mortensen is your favourite of the Best Actor nominees, but you also love Affleck. Would you vote for the latter because he actually stands a chance of winning, or would it be more important to you that your vote absolutely reflect your taste and judgement of merit?

Strategically probably more often, but because I love both Washington and Affleck, I'd vote for Mortensen because he is my favourite. I'd only vote strategically when I hated one of the main contenders (for instance, I'd vote for Ali for supporting actor even though Bridges is my favourite of the nominees).

Strategically to stop things I hate from winning

Honestly. I think that you have no right to complain about the wrong performances winning if you're a strategic voter.

Honest. All strategic voting does is needlessly fuck with the proceedings for a goal that is unlikely to be attained.

Honestly. Seriously, people who say strategically should stop hating on stuff and focus on the things they like. Hating is not an healthy mindset.

Honestly. I think that you have no right to complain about the wrong performances winning if you're a strategic voter. Yeah that's the whole paradox of it. Their justification is that the frontrunner is somehow "wrong" but they actually end up being the ones who are skewing the results.

I'd vote honestly for my favorite. I wouldn't care about who has the best shot at winning, or what film is the front runner.

Yes, I'd probably vote both. If there's a frontrunner who is way out ahead like Viola Davis that I don't love, but that I'd be okay with winning, I would vote honestly. If there was a frontrunner that I would be unhappy with winning, depending on how close the race was, I might vote strategically if I preferred the other nominee even if that nominee wasn't my absolute favorite nominee. However, if a frontrunner that I might not be happy with winning is too far out ahead, I'd just vote honestly since one vote is unlikely to stop someone who has won all the other televised awards.

I guess it'd depend. I wouldn't vote for someone I'm not passionate about, but I might in some rare circumstances support a candidate who isn't necessarily my #1. Take Best Actress in 2014. Witherspoon and Cotillard were the best in the lineup, but I absolutely would've voted for Moore. Not only was she good enough to merit a win, hers was a victory I'd long hoped to see (and my two favorites had already won anyway). I might also vote for a frontrunner I thought was worthy but not quite the best if they were up against a likely winner I strongly disliked. Like I said, it'd depend.

Honest, since there are a shitload of people voting strategically, and so I want to assure my favourites at least got some love.
Sometimes both may match tho.

This thread is so fcked up. Makes you wonder how many past wins were undeserved because of some Academy members reasoning like that.
