Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but the studio's category placements for Stone and Colman don't seem to be clear yet. I see some arguing that it would make more sense to put Colman in supporting because she has a better chance of winning there, and those who have seen the film say that it's more Stone's story and it makes sense to put her in lead. |

Why is everyone picking Colman in supporting and Stone in lead? I'm fairly sure it's the other way around. Colman isn't as well-known as Stone or Weisz, and even though she's blatantly lead, it hasn't stopped the Academy before (Mara, Vikander). Colman's also probably an easier sell in Supporting Actress to win. She's a character actress, which tend to do better in this category than in Lead, and she's got less competition than Best Actress, which seems inordinately stacked right now. Plus Fox Searchlight also has McCarthy, who's getting strong reviews of her own, and they likely want to maximize nominations/wins where they can. But with that said, The Crown is about to do wonders for Colman and make her the breakout of 2018, and I think that she could absolutely win in Lead with the right campaign. Stone and Weisz double-down on Supporting Actress, which feels more "right" than Colman going there because I feel that Weisz would wind up left out in the cold because they'd put more effort into Olivia's campaign. I think if Colman goes supporting, she's got less competition and can build the momentum for a strong run at the win. If she goes lead, it's a bit harder for her but I think it's definitely doable. FSL is probably the best campaigner in the business, Colman will have the narrative and the banner year, her speeches will be charming if Venice is any indication, and I think there might be reluctance within the industry to go gaga for Gaga beyond a token "welcome to the club" acting nod, and Close might just be a pipe dream. |
