He was the Woody Allen of his day (without the messy personal life), and of course responsible for one of the best lines ever which I may be remembering wrong: "Went to get mayonnaise, FU...........it took me 3 hours to realize FU was Felix Unger" (might be misremembering the mayo part?). Simon was married to Elaine Joyce who in her day was like sexy and weird and goofy beyond belief to me although everybody here seems to just like Ava Gardner and Nicole Kidman neither of whom you would think would respond particularly cutely to a food fight I'll tell ya that much. Then again she was at that cute peak when she was married to Bobby Van. Ok, nobody knows who Bobby Van is either. Kids today........ If Neil Simon only wrote Murder By Death I'd love him.......and he wrote a lot more than just that. RIP

Simon really did write some of the cleverest movies. I've never seen one of his plays. Kind of awful to say, but maybe his death will spark a new interest in his work.

He was brilliant. Every time I saw his name on a movie, I knew it would be amazing.

Probably the funniest writer there was IMO. His lines were incredible. When I first saw Murder by Death, I was rolling around on my couch laughing for the most part. Same goes for the both Odd Couple films (yes, also the second one, which I find even more hilarious for the first hour). And to think he also wrote The Sunshine Boys, Barefoot in Park, Biloxi Blues, and...

RIP.
He was part of that incredible team of comedian writers working for Sid Caesar thru the ’50s along with Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, etc. There’re several eps from Your Show of Shows on Youtube and they’re usually hilarious (Simon was staff writer for 139 eps).
I’ve seen/loved The Odd Couple, The Out of Towners, Murder by Death, and especially the funny as hell, sharply brilliantly written Heartbreak Kid. Maybe now Criterion will release it—the #1 film I’d pick for the treatment. Also thinking I should read some of his plays.....
