Good to see my thread reused for Bobby's 77th birthday. Whatever he may have done (or NOT done) with his career in the last 20 years, his first 30 years beat almost every other living actor's whole career. And it's not even close. So wish the man happy birthday and give him a break...  |

 Sean Penn (60 today) winning the Robert DeerNiro award?? HBD to Bobby D. My #1 all time in Supporting for Mean Streets. Other than his famous physicality, how many Americans have won an Oscar for an entirely foreign language performance? He can't do comedy? Check out Hi Mom where he fights a mop or the concierge wooden-leg scene from NY NY or, y'know, the King of Comedy. He's fallen off last few decades? Go watch The Irishman, Wizard of Lies, Everybody's Fine. He also delivered maybe the most inspiring line of dialogue in cinema history - "We're all in it together kid." All haters are disappointed dunskys or would rather be schmucks for a lifetime.  |

I've said this before - De Niro is the only actor in history who you could make an honestly compelling case for starring in - the best American film in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, 10s) - whether you personally like the films or not. Great actors.......... are in great movies...  |

HBD to badass Bobby ! I've rewatched a lot of his movies in the last year, along with some perfs I liked in first-watches - well, Comeback Trail from this year where he's very funny I thought.... Mad Dog and Glory where he's easily charming.... and a very slick biz type in Mistress, especially his big monologue there. Flower Moon should be a darker and special perf... and hopefully sets up a quality decade for him.  |

I love it when great actors or filmmakers acknowledge each other. Happy Birthday to Bobby D. His performance in Taxi Driver (which I saw at far too young an age) still stands as one of the most impressive pieces of acting and one of my all time favorite performances. |
