75 - he's the baby in the Mt Rushmore of him, Pacino, Hoffman, Nicholson. Latter two we may never see act in their 80s, same goes for Hackman and so many others, which is a shame. Let's hope ol' Bob stays in shape (check the picture from earlier this week in the spoilers belowwww) and gives us a few more memorable performances. Next year he'll have two high-profile projects btwn The Irishman and Joker. And if they pull off Irishman he deserves massive cred, he was the one bringing it up in every interview possible and keeping interest for it to eventually happen. Still badass, and the only actor who has a perf in my all time top 5 for lead and supp....

Happy birthday, to a great actor of course. One of my favorite De Niro's best performance is in The King of Comedy. He pulls off obsession, and fame-whoring in that film masterfully, essentially playing a loser, and it's huge part of a reason why I keep going back to the film so much. He's a real "tour-de-force".

Happy Birthday Bobby D. I might not rewatch Taxi Driver soon (probably leaning toward the underrated Jacknife or Heat) because I rewatched it for the XX times few months ago but that scene with the wizard is in my eyes, probably the greatest acting moment of his career, simply brillant.

As he gets older I choose to champion some of his to me overlooked stuff and not just the "big ones". In the last few months I've re-watched several of his films:
Everybody's Fine, Once Upon A Time In America, This Boy's Life........I don't like all of those performances all the way through maybe but I like how you you see different things too. For example I'm not a huge fan of OUATIA (good film, not great to me), but the scene immediately following the rape, where De Niro doesn't speak, he doesn't say one word and gets disgusted disrespect from the driver is one of the great scenes of his career.

Sometimes the word "legend" seems ......like .........not enough. Particularly when every f'n actor is called "great" or "greatest" or "iconic" - like we do nowadays. Not merely one of the great actors this country ever produced but along with Brando the most influential American actor ever.

He's the best. Case closed. Can't wait for tomorrow's performances charts. Not sure how many votes he'll get from me. Whoops... actually he might get a negative from me vote too , but many of his best aren't even on that list.

I’ve made it known how much I disdain the last thirty-odd years of his career, and how I think that even at his creative heights, he was still wildly overpraised—there is no more overrated performance than the one he gives in Taxi Driver in all of cinema—and how I think the fandom he built up over the years gives him far, far too many passes just because of his early work.
And yet. It cannot be denied that when the man was on, he could be fucking electric. The Deer Hunter is one of the finest performances ever put to screen: soulful, intense, ruminative. In the course of that movie, De Niro displayed the truest breadth of his range without needing to rely on body dysmorphia or bellowing bluster. I wish he had done more movies in that vein, as I feel that is the movie from the 1970s he should be revered for instead of his Scorsese/Coppola collaborations. His ‘80s run (with a few exceptions) is top-shelf and shows an actor still eager to try new things and blaze new trails, something I feel he abandoned in the ‘90s and never recovered.
So even though I have zero expectations from The Irishman, here’s to you, Bob. Hope you snap out of your Awakenings-esque stupor soon and give us something good in the near future.

Robert De Niro's distinctions, in my opinion:
1. The greatest set of 3 performances any actor has ever had 2. The greatest filmography any actor has ever had 3. Have to agree with pacinoyes that no actor since Brando has been as influential
Marlon Brando is the GOAT for me, but Robert De Niro is the only actor that even makes it a question.

Maybe - I make a different argument for De Niro's greatness - to me he's a no-brainer top 5 American actor (3rd for me) and that's his top 6 performances imo - Mean Streets, Gf II, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and King of Comedy over a span of 10 years can stand with any actor ever - ever regardless of country or era.
I don't necessarily call it "the best top 6" but no one is better than that imo - at best you can "equal" it. That's an amazing total because as I said in another thread once - all actors regardless of who they are basically get slotted to their top 5 or 6 even if they have a lot more great ones than 5 or 6. Basically people can't "keep it straight" after that - I don't mean us movie fans but average people.
5 or 6 is a lot too because it seems a sizable amount it isn't like he has "one" that towers over his filmography etc.

Happy Birthday Champ I think there's a couple of De Niro birthday threads maybe (?)....... but we used this one last year and if you were an obvious, no sh it Sherlock top 5 American film actor ever........well you could have 2 birthday threads too I guess. August 17th - Happy 77th.......not merely a very great actor, but a filmography in a bunch of BP nominees, the most influential American actor since Brando too. So, on his birthday I'd like to playfully send this out to all the "his new movie looked bad to me!" people and......the "I haven't liked him in 25 years!" people and to everybody who took big mouth Anjelica Huston's side and come to think of it actually to Anjelica Huston herself too
