Rounding out the staunch fanboy trifecta 'round these parts. I've always respected Pacino's performances but I never had the sheer passion and adulation for the man during his "prime." It wasn't until his HBO work that I truly fell for what the man was capable of, and I think he's very much the type of actor whose career reinvention didn't just revitalize himself, but managed to key into what I like and in doing so retroactively made me appreciate his work. I do think Pacino suffers a bit from having to contend with some truly all-time lineups in the 1970s (I'm certain that people view me rating him at #4 in 1974 is blasphemy.), and it pains me that I can't give him the win over Nicholson in '75, but them's the breaks.

I always say that Oscars don't matter (especially nowadays) but they really don't matter with him - he had 0 when each of his peers had 2. Nicholson has 2 more than him, no one cares. He's been non-nominated for much of his best and most daring work and heck he still gets passed over in a mainstream sense (he just got screwed out of a Paterno Emmy nod, oh well).......it's because there isn't one Al Pacino - there's almost too many to count - that is the entire source of his appeal. There's Blockbuster Al, Indie Al, TV Al, Classical Al, quiet Al, shouty Al, Why Is Al In This Piece of Crap, You Know What's A Great Pacino movie No One Knows Al? etc. It'd be nice if he won a 2nd one in 2019 but it's not really necessary to him because he is such a weird case in so many ways. The man said it best himself in one of his most revealing roles 1972 - 1st 1973 - 2nd behind Brando 1974 -1st 1975 - 1st 1979 5th 1990 3rd behind Pesci and Davidson 1992 Actor - 2nd behind Washington 1992 Supporting - 2nd behind Hackman
