Obviously it's clear that I'm a big DDL supporter (as much as pacinoyes and scrudpup are for their respective horses in the race), and looking at this run of nominations, obviously I think very highly of his nominated work. The man takes three wins from me, and it's only because of Thewlis in '93, Phoenix in '12 and the joint efforts of Gosling/Stanton/Phoenix in '17 that he doesn't sweep the other half of his nominations for me as well. A year on from his retirement, and seeing him rank so highly in today's actor's poll reminds me of the colossal talent that decided to re-enact what should've been the final scene of Lincoln: walking down the hall in silhouette and into the realm of legend.

1989: 1. Robin Williams 2. Morgan Freeman 3. DDL N/S the others
1993: 1. Anthony Hopkins 2. Liam Neeson 3. Tom Hanks 4. DDL 5. Laurence Fishburne
2002: 1. Michael Caine 2. Nicolas Cage 3. Adrien Brody 4. DDL 5. Jack Nicholson
2007: 1. DDL 2. Viggo Mortensen 3. George Clooney 4. Johnny Depp 5. Tommy Lee Jones
2012: 1. DDL 2. Bradley Cooper 3. Denzel Washington 4. Joaquin Phoenix 5. Hugh Jackman
2017: 1. DDL (if only because the competition is laughable) 2. Gary Oldman 3. Daniel Kaluuya 4. Denzel Washington N/S Chalamet
I just finished watching Phantom Thread (it's good, nothing special, not my cup of tea really), and I must say he's the only nominee that deserves to be there in '17.
In 2012 it's pretty much the same case, but Lincoln is a better movie and he delivers a powerhouse performance (Paul Brannigan of The Angels' Share is my win for the year, but DDL is a worthy second).
2007 is a titanic achievement in a stacked lineup. One of the GOAT performances, definitely.
He's good enough in Gangs of New York, chewing the scenery admirably. Just not quite up to snuff with his competition.
1993 is a good performance, but unremarkable. Hopkins and Neeson wipe the floor with their competition.
The kid playing Christy Brown did a better job than DDL. The competition is also weak, but he's downright bad. Doesn't help that the movie sucks -- it's hardly his fault he has no script.

2017
1 Denzel Washington 2 Daniel Day-Lewis 3 Gary Oldman 4 Daniel Kaluuya 5 Timothee Chalamet
Day-Lewis is another one similar to Denzel Washington that the Academy don't really nominate him unless the performance is strong enough to win (or as in the case with Lincoln, "feels" like the type of performance they like to see win). There's no throwaway nominations. Sure they could toss him respectable filler nods for Age Of Innocence or The Last Of The Mohicans, but they lack the juice of winners. Main difference between him and Washington is that he always usually comes with the traction of being in a Best Picture nominee. Washington himself might have a 3rd or 4th Oscar already if he had nominated performances in more Best Picture nominees. Shocking that only 1 of his 8 acting nods came from a Best Pic nominee. And it was the one he directed (Fences).
He's the clear winner for me in 1989. Though one feels bad for Cruise losing out in a not dissimilar role to DDL's, and maybe his finest performance. Neeson feels the easy winner in 1993 for me, but DDL was a solid runner-up. Hanks was actually weakest of the group, but I feel he won for the role and statement it made at the time, not so much the acting. The ghost of Stanely Kramer lives on!
2002 is tough for me, because DDL is incredible as the Butcher. But Brody is hauntingly brilliant, and it's tragic he never reached these heights again. Brody deserved to win. 2007....easy win for DDL. Good performance by DDL in 2012, but bettered by Washington and the guy who should have won, Phoenix. As with Oldman in 2017, he had the built in role to win for, but others were better. 2017....Washington was the strongest. I still think Vickey Krieps absolutely gave the strongest performance in Phantom Thread, but it's a fun double act to watch (or trio if you include Manville), and I appreciate how nuanced DDL was. Unlike most of DDL's work, it's a grower, not a shower. So a good runner-up.

1st in every year except 1993 - 2nd to Hopkins - 2002 - 3rd behind Brody and Nicholson and 2012 2nd behind Phoenix, or arguably 3rd behind Washington too but Washington's film ends awfully and might cost him the 2nd spot to DDL because it affects Washington's performance too at the very end.
Up until Lincoln he was the rarest of all things - a great actor who had been nodded and won for exactly what he deserved - that never happens - never ripped off, never rewarded unfairly.........Lincoln was 1 win too many, but Phantom Thread - a staggering tour de force, not only corrected that, it's one of the great "farewell roles" (if indeed it is) in film history.......

I have Cage above him in 2002, and everyone above him in 2012.
I have him first from the performances I've seen (which is most of them) in all the other years.
He's my actual winner in 1989 & 2017.
