I actually saw McKellen play Lear (great) many years back at BAM but this seems a much bigger deal and will be broadcast into US theaters in the fall, as well. My very favorite performance of his is his TV version of Macbeth with Judi Dench, but for films it's Gods and Monsters which is something of a masterclass and really - very detailed and specific and heartbreaking too - it's awe inspiring acting. I am a fan of his Richard III which is also great too of course it's just that I like it a little less than Olivier's Richard which no one really agrees with nowadays. Both wonderful though in different ways ...........
There's sly fun, gallows humor, and much underlying menace in his Apt Pupil work, I always think that film is short-changed and I watch it whenever I come across it. Far better than its reputation suggests to me at least.
