Anybody watch ep1? I thought it was really solid (aside from the very trite framing device that isn't needed). Stiller's directing is competent so far - I like the pace, taking its time to set up character and location. Using looks and glances as curious not-yet-known intentions. Del Toro, Dano, Arquette all are fine so far.
As for the layout -- already thinking this isn't gonna benefit from the weekly wait. It may even be too slow for those accustomed to hyper cable tv dramas. And there's a feeling of building in the narrative that the weekly remove might stymie. Also is the last ep going to air in January? So do we count this 2018 or 2019? Errrrr...

Ep2 a little better than ep1. Framing device out of the way, this one has a bookend that's a little more poetic. Arquette is the standout so far, there's the impressive transformation (extremely unappealing, most actresses would turn away from this kind of role) and her performance in ep2 is smart - a crassness and strange vanity that is doubling over her sense of wrongdoing. Some power shifting going on with Del Toro and Dano. Some great prison detail. And an interesting, and apt, animal motif going on - horses, dogs, bugs, Call of the Wild, not to mention the prisoners being caged. And one more plus: a Modern Lovers song!
Note on the production: Stiller said in a recent interview that they pretty much shot the whole thing in the manner of a movie, one big haul for the cast/crew, out of sequence, etc. Again, the weekly format isn't doing this show any favors.

I definitely plan to catch this, but I'm 10000% waiting for it to be done so I can just binge it. How's Del Toro?

Del Toro is good so far. Very composed disposition, that sort of level behavior makes you think he's a decent guy, confident, smart, but there's also a lot of him sizing up people and the situation, so there's interesting hints at a more calculating, much darker side of him to come.

Wish we had some more discussion on this. Really loved it. The performances are amazing Patricia Arquette gave her best performance ever, Eric Lange was unrecognizable, and Paul Dano and Benicio Del Toro are great as usual.
Probably the most surprising part was Ben Stiller’s direction. He should be a serious contender at the Emmys. I know he’s directed films before but I had no idea just how skilled he was with the camera until now. Some amazing long takes, gorgeous shots, a real sense of atmosphere and environment. I’m really excited to see what he does next.

I've been watching it over the last few weeks and finished it today. Definitely has some pacing issues and it could have cut down two or three episodes, but over all there is some strong direction and the cast does a really good job being such deplorable people. Episode six was my favorite and I'm not sure if it quite stuck the landing, but overall it's worth seeing.

I just finished episode 6. I don’t think I’ve ever been as furious with a character as I a was with Patricia Arquette when she told her son his dad said h didn’t want to be his da any more.
