What are some great TV performances that you feel don't get enough praise?
Probably my prime example is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who obviously got a lot of attention for her iconic performance as Buffy, but who's work I feel doesn't fully get recognised for the all-time level stuff that it is. Just watch "The Body" - beyond sensational.
Some more modern examples are Noah Emmerich (The Americans) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), with the latter suffering due to her character being discarded by many as the show's weak link. Piper can be insufferable, but Schilling is always a cast standout.

Aya Cash in You're the Worst - her season 2 work is on another level, but it's really time for people to start appreciating her work here as one of the best TV performances this decade.
Jimmy Smits in Sons of Anarchy - I'm not sure I've ever seen another show where someone joined the cast so late in the series' run and made such a huge impact. Hunnam brought it in the later seasons, but Jimmy Smits really made it worth not giving up on.
Diane Ladd and Luke Wilson in Enlightened - obviously everyone knows that Laura Dern is amazing... but these two were great throughout the series and fantastic on the two episodes that focused on each of their characters respectively.
Laurence Fishburne in Hannibal - Mads and Hugh are obviously out of this world, but Larry doesn't get enough credit for his work here.
Sissy Spacek in Bloodline - can't believe she never got nominated for anything for this... absolutely incredible in season 3.
Steve Little in Eastbound and Down - one of the funniest performances ever.
Peter Gallagher in The O.C. - he was pretty fantastic on season 1, then they gave his character mostly crap to do and he wasn't able to continue at that level for the most part...

Jimmy Smits in Sons of Anarchy is the first to come to mind, definitely.
Chris Bauer deserves to be mentioned as one of the shining stars of The Wire alongside Royo, Williams and Elba, yet I don't really see many championing him.
Ron Livingston's performance in Band of Brothers is my favorite supporting performance in a TV miniseries.

Oh god so, so, so many come to mind (and without mentioning guys who were nominated for Emmys like Ivanek in Damages, who while winning the Emmy is rarely ever mentioned in any best ever lists besides my own or John Mahoney in Fraiser, who was nominated at least a few times)...
Damages - Tate Donovan and Dylan Baker. Band of Brothers - Livingston, Lewis, Hughes. Parks and Rec - Adam Scott. The Office - Angela Kinsey. Breaking Bad - Norris and Brandt (particularly for the last season). Each guy in the SoA crew had their particular season to shine, but with a big shout out to Flannagan and Mark Boone Junior (as well as the already twice mentioned Jimmy Smits... who was also incredible in West Wing, but if you were in that show at any point in time, you got nominated). The Americans - Noah Emmerich (I know a lot of people love Taylor, but I haven't gotten there yet... so back off!).
Honestly, I could spend a whole day just listing these people.

Emmy Rossum in Shameless. Macy rightfully gets the lions share of the accolades but she deserves far more recognition.
Jim O’Heir, Parks and Rec
Melissa Fumero, Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Laurence Fishburne in Hannibal - Mads and Hugh are obviously out of this world, but Larry doesn't get enough credit for his work here. Yes! The scene when he deduces that his wife has cancer was brilliantly, beautifully played.

The Middle cast especially Chris Kattan My first thought was Eden Sher for The MiddleI'll also add Erika Alexander for Living Single as someone who immediately came to mind.

Ian McShane gets all the love for Deadwood, but William Sanderson gave the funniest performance I've ever seen in a tv show. He deserves more recognition than he gets.

In modern times, Eden Sher for the middle would be the only choice for me. She was doing all time great stuff for 9 years on that show, and getting stupidly ignored for it for almost the entire time. As if I needed any more reason to view the Emmy Awards as the most laughable of all the awards. I guess kudos to the Critics Choice Television Awards for giving her some of the due she deserved. Going further back, and calling it underrated on this board and its predecessor specifically, Robbie Coltrane in Cracker; although perhaps it is more so underseen. Also his co-stars Geraldine Somerville and Lorcan Cranitch were underrated in general, not just specifically to here. Others...Christopher Meloni - Oz Kathy Burke - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Ciaran Griffiths - Shameless (UK) Chris Bauer - The Wire Dominic West - The Wire
Theo Rossi - Sons of Anarchy Robert Webb - The Smoking Room Robert Iler - The Sopranos

Glad he got that nod for the last season. Yeah, his performance in the final episode especially is really powerful acting. Season 6 was definitely the weakest of the show and feels like a bit of a mess compared to the first five, but it still had some really quality stuff in it.

Plus, Emerson killed it in that episode too. Emerson was fantastic in Season 6. His delivery of "Because he's the only one that will have me" when Illana asks why he's going back to "Locke" is straight up devastating and one of the best moments in the show.

Luke Wilson, "Enlightened" Vincent Kartheiser, "Mad Men" Kelly Bishop, "Gilmore Girls" Gillian Jacob, "Love" Damian Lewis, "Homeland"Not seen the rest, but don't know if I'd call Lewis underrated. I felt like he got a lot of praise for the first two seasons alone and is a huge part of why the season one finale is one of the best episodes of television ever. But I would absolutely add Mandy Patinkin or Rupert Friend from the same show.
